Men’s Basketball Dominates Houghton with Three Players in Double Figures

Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Men's Basketball team had three players in double figures as it dominated winning, 73-47, over the Houghton College Highlanders Tuesday evening at Speidel Gymnasium. The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 4-13, while the loss drops the Highlanders to 0-17.

From the beginning the game was controlled by the Soaring Eagles who took the lead early and kept stretching it out over the next 40 minutes. In the first half of play the Highlanders played tough keeping the score within reach until the last couple of minutes when the Soaring Eagles stretched out its lead to 29-16 at halftime.   

In the second half the Purple and Gold continued to dominate by using strong defense and knocking down several jumpers. EC would use the next 20 minutes of play to dictate the game and stretch out its lead to as many as 29 points before finishing off a 73-47 victory.

Derrick Vogel '14, Chris Cassidy '14 and Josh Keys '14 each finished in double figures for EC. Vogel led the team recording a double-double with 16 points and a career-high 10 assists. Cassidy earned another double-double recording 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Keys pitched in with 13 points. Neil Randolph '15 and David Borelli '15 also played outstanding combining for 17 points, nine boards, two steals and two blocks. EC was able to dominate Houghton in field goal shooting percentage (52% - 32%), three point percentage (44% - 22%) and bench points (24 - 13).    

The EC Men's Basketball team will return to action Friday when it hosts conference power Hartwick College at Speidel Gymnasium at 8:00 p.m.
