Cortland, NY -- Four first half field goals by the Elmira College men's basketball team (0-3) proved to be too much to overcome as the Soaring Eagles fell on the road to non-conference opponent Cortland State (2-0), 63-51. Tonight's game was filled with whistles as 51 total personal fouls were called between the two teams, resulting in 54 combined foul shot attempts.
Elmira's
Neil Randolph led all EC scorers with 14 points and tied for the team high in rebounds with seven. EC big-man
David Borelli '15 shared the team lead in rebounds as he pulled down seven boards while
Kurt Dutcher '14 and
Nick Cesare '16 combined for 16 points. Six of Dutcher's points came from the charity stripe while six of Cesare's were scored from beyond the arc.
The Soaring Eagles struggled from the floor in the first half, going just 4-for-21fromthe field, totaling 16 first half points. Despite Elmira's slow start from the field, the Soaring Eagles were able to keep things close for most of the first half as they trailed the Red Dragons 14-10 at the 8:10 mark. However, Cortland would outscore Elmira 14-6 for the remainder of the half to claim a 28-16 lead.
In the second half, Elmira found their stroke as they made 46.2% of their shots from the field. Unfortunately for the Soaring Eagles, Cortland was able to maintain their scoring performance as they only let Elmira get as close as eight points in the second half, resulting in a 63-51 loss for the Purple and Gold.
Credit the Cortland defense for much of tonight's success as the Red Dragons forced 15 Elmira turnovers, resulting in 21 points off those turnovers. Elmira did however own the advantage inside as EC outscored Cortland 16-12 in the paint.
Elmira will look to get in the win column this Saturday, November 23rd as the Soaring Eagles take on visiting Hilbert College in a non-conference game. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Speidel Gymnasium in Elmira, NY.
