Cortland, NY -- It was a tough shooting night for the Elmira College women's basketball team (1-2) as they fell to Cortland State (2-1) 68-41.
Jessica Zoltowski '14 led the Soaring Eagles with 10 points, but was the only EC player in double digits as the Purple and Gold shot just 28.9 percent from the field.
The Soaring Eagles faced an uphill battle almost from the opening tip as Cortland took a one point lead at the 17:24 mark and never looked back. The Red Dragons used a 13-7 run to break open a nine point lead, but the Purple and Gold would respond with a run of their own to cut the lead to three after an Elizabeth Forrest '14 layup with 4:47 left in the opening half. Cortland would regroup over the final minutes of the half to halt EC's run and take a nine point lead into the locker room.
EC was able to cut the Red Dragon lead to seven after coming out of halftime, but that was as close as the Soaring Eagles would get as Cortland used a 21-6 run over the next nine minutes to extend their lead to 22. The Red Dragons continued to hit almost every shot they took in the final 20 minutes as their lead ballooned to 30 points behind 50 percent shooting in the second half. The final horn would sound to signal EC's 68-41 defeat.
Elmira struggled from the field today, shooting 28.9 percent from the field and 23.1 percent from behind the arc while their opponents shot nearly 50 percent from the floor. The Red Dragons owned the glass tonight, outrebounding EC 40-20 and producing 14 second-chance points off of 14 offensive rebounds.
The Soaring Eagles will look to bounce back from tonight's loss on Saturday, November 23rd when they host Keystone College in a non-conference game. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
