Men’s Basketball Cruises Past Alfred

Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Men's Basketball team controlled the game throughout as it outplayed visiting Alfred University cruising to a 73-50 victory Tuesday evening in Speidel Gymnasium. The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 6-15 overall and 3-7 in Empire 8 play, while the loss drops the Saxons to 6-15 and 2-9.

Chris Cassidy '14 led the Soaring Eagle attack tallying a double-double on 17 points and 13 rebounds, while dishing out four assists. Kurt Dutcher '14 added 15 points shooting 70 percent from the field and Derrick Vogel '14 contributed 14 points, five rebounds, four helpers and four steals.

Elmira got out to a quick 8-0 lead to start the game behind four points from Cassidy. The Soaring Eagles never trailed in the contest and opened up its lead to as many as 20 at 34-14 with 2:54 remaining in the first half. EC led 40-22 at intermission. Cassidy led the Purple and Gold with 13 points and eight rebounds at the break, while Gerald Colas tallied 13 points in the period.

The Saxons scored first out of halftime, but would get no closer than 16 points the remainder of the game. Meanwhile, Elmira held a comfortable margin throughout with its lead ballooning to as many as 32 points with 2:29 remaining in the contest after a Brandon DiPaola '13 trey.

The Soaring Eagles shot a remarkable 54 percent from the field in the game (28-for-52) and 39 percent from long distance (7-for-18). Meanwhile Alfred converted just 28 and 10 percent of its shots, respectively. EC held advantages of 15-10 in points off turnovers and a 32-20 edge inside in points in the paint.

The Men's Basketball team returns to action Friday when it travels to Hoboken, NJ to take on No. 25 Stevens Institute of Technology in a pivotal conference tilt starting at 8:00 p.m.
