Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Women's Lacrosse team finished the game scoring five unanswered goals to turn a 10-8 deficit into a 13-10 victory Sunday afternoon at Campus Field. The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 5-5 overall and 1-2 in Empire 8 play, while the loss drops the Hawks to 4-6 and 1-2.
Moorea Spoljaric '16 was remarkable offensively as she finished with six goals and one assist on the day.
Marki Michaels '13 and
Ashton Hogan '15 each chipped in two goals apiece.
Rebecca Matturro '14 was a fortress defensively finishing with a game-high five caused turnovers.
Elmira was in control early on as it opened the contest with three straight goals in the first seven minutes, two of which came from the stick of
Spoljaric. After two Hawk goals made it 3-2,
Spoljaric answered with her third goal of the game and 22nd of the season.
The Soaring Eagles opened up a 6-4 lead after
Hogan and
Spoljaric netted back-to-back scores within a 19 second span. However, 'Wick closed the half tallying three of the next four markers as the teams played to a 7-7 draw at intermission.
Hartwick scored three out of the first four goals out of halftime playing with increased intensity. Emily Jweid found the back of the net twice for 'Wick on the run. Jweid's score with 21:17 remaining in the game would be the last goal on the day for the Hawks as the Soaring Eagle defense tightened up, allowing the offense to score five unanswered times.
Spoljaric started the run with 18:23 remaining on a free position shot.
Emma Schepers '14 tied the game at 10-10 on an impressive individual move beating the Hawk goalie.
Spoljaric converted her third free position goal of the day with 8:31 left on the clock to give Elmira its first lead of the second frame. The Purple and Gold remained tough continuing to attack as
Marissa Mongillo '15 recorded an unassisted marker and
Michaels tallied her second score of the game off a pass from
Spoljaric.
The contest was remarkably close as both teams had 20 shots on goal. Hartwick held minimal edges in ground balls (26-25) and draw controls (14-11). Elmira converted 80 percent of its free position shots going 4-for-5, while Hartwick went 5-for-9 on free position shot attempts.
LeAnna Presler '14 made nine saves earning the win for Elmira.
Mary Kate Gellerman '14 started the contest stopping one shot. Steph Luce made seven saves in the loss for 'Wick.
