Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College men's basketball team (5-8) dropped a heartbreaker at home tonight to the Saints of St. Lawrence University (5-7), 67-59. Third-year talent
Neil Randolph '15 led the Soaring Eagles with 21 points and seven rebounds.
Along with Randolph's offensive contributions,
Josh Keys '14 also had a good night, knocking down four three-pointers, upping his career total to 226 as he recorded 12 points. EC also received some help from their bench tonight as five different players combined for 19 points, including
Oladapo Badmos '17 who chipped-in eight points and three assists.
The first eight minutes of tonight's game was controlled by the Soaring Eagles as Elmira opened the game with a monster 17-4 run. Keys carried the offensive load during that stretch as he knocked down three consecutive three-point baskets which extended Elmira's lead to 12-2 at the time.
St. Lawrence would settle-in and piece together a crucial run of their own, outscoring Elmira 16-3 over a seven minute span to tie the game at 20-all at the 5:00 minute mark. From there, both teams would score 13 points apiece to end the half, bringing the score to 33-33 at the break. Elmira would have gone into halftime with a three-point deficit had it not been for Badmos, who drained a contested three-pointer with three seconds left in the half to keep things even.
Coming out of the break, Elmira would be held to a pair of three-point baskets over a six and half minute stretch as St. Lawrence took their largest lead of the game, 50-39 at the 13:28 mark. The Saints' lead would hover around nine points for the majority of the half until Elmira's Randolph knocked down a jumper at the 1:07 mark and followed it up with a made basket from beyond the arc, cutting St. Lawrence's lead to 63-59 with 29 seconds left in the game. Unfortunately for Elmira, St. Lawrence would knock down four free throw attempts to seal the game at 67-59.
Elmira will look to get back in the win column this Tuesday, January 21st when EC travels to take on Hamilton College in a non-conference game. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
