Hodlofski, Schieder Named EC Athletes of the Week

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Jordan Hodlofski '17 of the men's soccer team and Natalie Schieder '19 of the women's volleyball team have been named Elmira College Athletes of the Week for their fine individual efforts over the week that was.

Two weeks ago, Hodlofski, a defenseman by trade, made his collegiate debut as a goalkeeper for Elmira. Since then, the fourth-year Soaring Eagle has made three consecutive starts in net and has performed exceedingly well, including a career outing against Empire 8 Conference rival, Nazareth College.

On Sunday against the Golden Flyers, Hodlofski made a career-high eight saves, double his previous single-game high, while blanking Naz en route to a 0-0 double-overtime draw. His last of three second-half stops came with under a minute left in regulation, forcing the extra sessions. He needed two more saves in the first overtime period and one in the second to record his first career clean sheet.

The Troy, Pennsylvania, native added to his totals from the Nazareth outing with a four-save performance in a non-conference bout with Medaille College on Tuesday, October 18th. Hodlofski held the Mavericks scoreless for over 73 minutes, before Medaille struck for the lone goal of the contest on a header off of a high crossing pass.

In his last three games, all starts, Hodlofski has accumulated a paltry 0.62 goals-against average with an .882 save percentage and 15 stops. The senior will look to pick up his first victory the in final home game of his EC career, when the Soaring Eagles host King's College (Pa.) at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 26th, in the 2016 home finale on Campus Field.

Schieder continued to lead the Elmira women's volleyball team, as the second-year standout recorded a pair of double-digit kill matches and her team-high 10th double-double of the season at this past weekend's Empire 8 Crossover.

Against the conference tournament-bound Golden Flyers, the sophomore outside hitter paced all players with 10 kills and a trio of service aces to go along with seven digs. However, it was her effort against Hartwick College that stood out the most, as the Alden, New York, native guided the Soaring Eagles to a straight-sets victory. EC had to overcome sizable deficits in each of the first two sets. In the second set, she registered back-to-back kills to knot the score at 16-all, and then broke a 17-17 tie with a kill and a block in consecutive games. In the third set, Schieder served a crucial ace to break a 25-25 tie, allowing the Soaring Eagles to secure the victory with the following point.

Over the weekend, Schieder finished with 20 kills, 25 digs, five service aces, and two solo blocks. With 10 kills and 18 digs in the victory over Hartwick, she picked up the 10th double-double of the season and the 22nd of her career. The reigning E8 All-Conference Honorable Mention selection currently leads the league in kills per set (4.05), while ranking eighth in both aces (.47) and digs (3.47) per set.

The Elmira women's volleyball team wraps up play inside Speidel Gymnasium for the 2016 season with Class of 2017 Recognition Day on Tuesday, October 25th, when the Soaring Eagles host the University of Rochester. The non-conference tilt will begin at 6:00 p.m.
