Rochester, NY -- For the first time in over six years, the Elmira College women's lacrosse team has swept the Empire 8 Conference weekly awards, as
Moorea Spoljaric '16 was named the Player of the Week and
Lindsay Wargo '17 the Goalie of the Week, announced by the league on Monday.
This week's honors mark the second time that both Spoljaric and Wargo have received weekly accolades in 2016.
While splitting a pair of conference games against Nazareth College and Alfred University, Spoljaric racked up a total of 13 points on 10 goals and three assists, while she also collected 10 draw controls, eight ground balls, and two caused turnovers.
The senior captain first tied and then set a new program record for career goals with a pair of five-goal performances. She tallied five goals against Nazareth to equal the previous all-time mark, held by Katya Outwater '07 with 166. She scored five more times in a 13-7 win over the Saxons to break the record, moving into first place with a total of 171 goals.
Through the first dozen games of her senior campaign, Spoljaric has accumulated 62 points and 53 goals. She needs three more in each category to tie Outwater's single-season program records, which were both set by the former Soaring Eagle in the 2006 season. As of Monday, April 25th, the Saugerties, NY, product leads the Empire 8 in every per game category except assists, ranking first in goals (4.42), points (5.17), ground balls (4.17), draw controls (5.08), and ground balls (3.00).
Wargo played all 120:00 minutes in goal for the Soaring Eagles last week, making a total of 25 saves throughout. The Madison, CT, native scooped up 10 ground balls.
Against Naz, the third-year net minder turned in a career-high 17 saves. She then denied the Saxons eight times while limiting Alfred to seven goals in the victory. She posted a .533 save percentage against Alfred, her second best of the year.
After missing the start of the season due to illness, Wargo has made a strong return to her starting role between the pipes. The junior currently boasts a 4-3 record, with her four wins tied for the fourth-most in single-season program history, and ranks second in the conference with 8.63 saves per game With a career total of 243 saves, Wargo sits sixth all-time and needs 20 more to move into a two-way tie for fifth place.
The Elmira College women's lacrosse team will host Hartwick College on Monday, April 25th, at 5:00 p.m., seeking a second straight Empire 8 victory.
