ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Maddy Jerolman '19 of the nationally-ranked women's ice hockey team and
Eddie Nolan '17 of the men's ice hockey team have been crowned the Elmira College Athletes of the Week, for the week ending November 15th.
Jerolman's effort on the ice was influential for the No. 5-ranked Soaring Eagles in their home-and-home series against conference foe, SUNY Cortland. The second-year forward netted three goals with one assist for four points to help guide EC to a sweep of the Red Dragons. Elmira scored a combined 10 goals in the two games, earning a pair of decisive 5-1 and 5-0 victories on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
During Friday's road bout in Cortland, Jerolman tallied twice, as she scored EC's first and final goals. The game-opening goal was recorded in the final minute of the first period and helped spark a three-goal run that bridged into the second period. Then at the 17:02 mark of the third, Jerolman capitalized on an EC power-play opportunity to put the Purple and Gold up by four.
On Saturday, the Hamden, Connecticut, native picked up one goal and one helper en route to a blowout victory over the Red Dragons at the Murray Athletic Center. She picked up the second assist on the second score of the game, a power-play tally from
Louisa Lippiatt Durnell '18, in the second period. Jerolman then added her third goal of the weekend with a beautiful play on the right-wing side. She received the puck high in the right faceoff circle and deked her way around Cortland's Samantha Pippin and into the slot before finishing on the doorstep of the crease.
On the season, Jerolman is third on the team and 13th in the ECAC West in points with 14 (7g, 7a). She moved also up to fourth in power-play goals (3) and ninth in power-play points (7).
Jerolman will look to extend her consecutive game multi-point streak tonight, as the EC women travel to Williamstown, Massachusetts, to face the Ephs of Williams College in a non-conference contest at 7:00 p.m.
Nolan tied his previous single-game career high with one goal and one assist for the men's ice hockey team in their 5-2 upset victory over No. 13/14 nationally-ranked Salve Regina University on Saturday. It marked just the second time the fourth-year defender finished a game with two points, with his first such outing coming in his freshman season.
The senior captain started the scoring play that gave the Soaring Eagles a 1-0 lead late in the first period, as he earned the secondary assist on a first-period goal from
Kenny Tencza '19 with a pass to
Tyler Theodoulou '18 out of the Elmira zone to center ice.
After the Seahawks clawed back from a two-goal deficit to tie the game at 2-2, a tremendous individual effort from Nolan allowed the Soaring Eagles to regain the lead for good. He picked off an errant pass at the blue line and carried the puck into the offensive zone down the left-wing side. With a head of steam, he blew past his defender into the left faceoff circle and beat Salve netminder Blake Wojtala glove-side for the eventual game-winning goal.
Not only did Nolan finish with his second multi-point game, but the game-winner was also the second of his collegiate career. The Dorchester, Massachusetts, native upped his season total to five points (2g, 3a), third-most on the EC squad among defensemen.
The Soaring Eagles will look to build off of their first nationally-ranked victory of the season on Saturday, January 21st, when the Purple and Gold kick-off a three-game series with Hobart College. The series opener, which will not count towards the ECAC West Conference standings, will be played on neutral ice in Skaneateles, New York, and is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
