Empire 8 Conference Release
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Following a historic week for the Elmira College women's basketball team, the Empire 8 Conference crowned
Danielle Cleary '18 the league's Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday.
In a three-game week, Cleary finished with an average of 15.0 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. More noteworthy, however, was her performance on Thursday, January 26
th, in a non-conference contest against Wells College. In front of her friends and family in attendance at Speidel Gymnasium that night, the junior guard scored a season-high-tying 26 points and picked up her second double-double of the season with 11 rebounds to lead the Soaring Eagles to a 69-50 victory over the Express.
With back-to-back treys less than 30 seconds apart early in the fourth quarter, Cleary reached a milestone only previous achieved by five other players in program history, as she became the sixth member of Elmira's prestigious 1,000-point club. Following a 13-point outing in Saturday's bout with Hartwick College, her career point total sits at 1,018, sixth-most in program history and only 30 shy of becoming one of EC's top-five all-time leading scorers.
Cleary's name is also penciled in among Elmira's greatest in several other categories, including career points per game average, where she ranks fourth all-time at 15.2. She is also third in career free throw makes with 271 and sixth in 3-pointers with 109.
The Cleary-led Soaring Eagles will kick off a three-game homestand on Tuesday, January 31st, when Elmira hosts St. John Fisher College at Speidel Gymnasium. The conference rivalry is set to renew at 6:00 p.m.
