Bawiec, Evangelous Receive EC Athlete of the Week Honors

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 26th are Conor Bawiec '18, who led the baseball team to victory over Rutgers University-Camden with a record pitching performance, and Maddie Evangelous '19, whose game-high three points guided the nationally-ranked women's ice hockey team past Buffalo State in the ECAC West Semifinals.

A two-time Empire 8 All-Conference Honorable Mention utility player, Bawiec toed the rubber for the first time in 2017 against the Scarlet Raptors and delivered one of the finest outings of his career. The junior from Lebanon, Pennsylvania, lasted all nine innings, marking the first complete game thrown by an E8 pitcher in 2017 and the fifth of his collegiate career. He limited Rutgers-Camden to a lone run on seven hits and fanned 10 – a new program single-game record – without issuing a walk.

After surrendering a run to the Scarlet Raptors in the second inning, the 6-foot-4-inch righty carved through the Rutgers-Camden lineup and retired the side in order in the third, fifth, seventh, and ninth innings. He capped off the victory in style by striking out all three batters in the ninth to secure EC's first win of the young season.

Bawiec and the Soaring Eagles have nearly two weeks off, before Elmira returns to action with a doubleheader against The City College of New York on Saturday, March 11th, beginning at 12:00 p.m.

Evangelous turned in a stellar performance for the No. 4/5 EC women's ice hockey team in its 6-0 ECAC West Semifinal victory over Buffalo State at the Murray Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon. She helped jumpstart the offense and earned a point on Elmira's second, third, and fourth goals. Her three points not only led all scorers, but they also equaled her previous season and career high.

The Hudson, Massachusetts, native earned assists on a second-period goal from Maddy Jerolman '19 and a power-play tally early in the third off the stick of Louisa Lippiatt Durnell '20, her 16th and 17th helpers of the season. Evangelous then netted a shorthanded goal at the 7:58 mark of the third period to extended the Soaring Eagle advantage to 4-0. After a takeaway in Buffalo State's defensive zone, Katie Granato '19 fired a pass to Evangelous in the slot, and the second-year forward beat the Bengals' goalie five-hole for the score.

Evangelous, who received ECAC West All-Rookie Team honors as a freshman, is having another standout season in 2016-17. The sophomore sits one point shy of the team lead with 26, a new single-season career high, as are her 15 assists.

Following the semifinal victory, Evangelous and the No. 4/5-ranked Soaring Eagles will trek north to Plattsburgh, New York, to face the top-ranked Cardinals of Plattsburgh State in the ECAC West Championship Game on Saturday, March 4th, at 3:00 p.m.
