ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Kelcey Crawford '18 of the nationally-ranked women's ice hockey team and
Anthony Parrucci '20 of the men's ice hockey team have been crowned the Elmira College Athletes of the Week for their efforts on the ice over the past weekend.
Crawford started both ends of a two-game home set with No. 7/8 Oswego State at the Murray Athletic Center Ice Arena, going 1-0-1 in goal with a total of 59 saves in 124:53 minutes of action.
On Friday, February 3rd, the Purcellville, Virginia, native turned in a stellar performance en route to a 4-0 shutout victory over the Lakers. She re-established her single-game career high for saves with 36, including a whopping 22 in the third period alone, which stands as a new program record for saves made in a single period. Crawford is only of one two EC goalies to make over 20 saves in a period, joining teammate
Kyle Nelson '17, who held the previous record with 21.
The following day, the junior netminder made 23 stops, as the Purple and Gold played to a 2-2 overtime draw with nationally-ranked Oswego State. Crawford turned aside a pair of shots in the extra session to preserve the tie, as the Soaring Eagles remained unbeaten in conference play at 12-0-2.
On the season, Crawford sits atop the NCAA Division III leaderboard in both goals-against average (0.80) and save percentage (.964), while her team-leading five shutouts are just two shy of the national lead. She'll guide the No. 5/5 Soaring Eagles into their biggest challenge of the season this weekend, as EC heads north to face No. 1/1 Plattsburgh State in a two-game series that has serious playoff implications. Elmira opens the set versus the Cardinals on Saturday, February 10th, at 3:00 p.m.
Parrucci netted the biggest goal of his young career on Saturday night at the Murray Athletic Center against ECAC West foe, Nazareth College. After dropping an overtime bout on the road against Utica College the previous night, the first-year forward tallied his second career goal to lift the Soaring Eagles to a 2-1 overtime victory over the Golden Flyers.
The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, native needed only 46 seconds in the extra session to produce the first game-winning goal of his collegiate career. The play started when
Noah Anderson '19 lofted the puck high into the offensive zone.
Mitch Atkins '19 was able to beat a Naz defender to it in the slot and his first touch pushed the puck towards the right corner to
Tyler Theodoulou '18. The junior then fired a pass back across the front of the net to Parrucci, who ended up with a wide-open look at the left side of the net and tickled the twine for Elmira's first overtime victory of the season.
A 6-foot-1-inch rookie, Parrucci is one of only five players to skate in all 21 games for the Soaring Eagles and has recorded two goals with one assist for three points in his debut season. He'll look to guide EC to a much-needed conference win over Neumann University on home ice on Friday, February 10th, at 7:00 p.m.
