ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College Athletes of the Week for the week ending March 12 are senior
Kelsey Quail '17 of the women's lacrosse team, who recorded a career-high-tying four points in the season opener against Lycoming, and sophomore
Kristin Chivers '19 of the women's ice hockey team, who earned a two points in the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinal against No. 2 Adrian College.
Quail started her season campaign off on a strong note, as she netted two goals and dished out a pair of assists on the road against the Warriors in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, on March 8. She had a hand in all three of EC's first-half goals, as she tallied one-and-a-half minutes into the game, before assisting on goals from
Macy Huntley '19 and
Rachael Goetz '20. Despite a lopsided final score of 18-9, those early points had the Soaring Eagles on the heels of the Warriors in the opening half. Her early goal tied the game at 1-1 and her assists helped bring EC within two each time, the latter at 5-3.
The Cortland, New York, native not only led the team in points in the season-opening bout, but her four points tied her previous single-game high, which she set on March 17, 2015, against the University of Rochester. Quail also collected four ground balls, one shy of the game high, a team-leading three draw controls, and caused one turnover.
The senior midfielder will look to guide the Soaring Eagles past the Bengals of Buffalo State in Elmira's next contest on Wednesday, March 15. EC will travel to Buffalo, New York, for a non-conference matchup, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
Chivers was one of two Soaring Eagles to register multiple points for the No. 5/6 women's ice hockey team in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championships against No. 2-ranked Adrian College on Saturday afternoon. The 2016-17 ECAC West All-Conference Honorable Mention selection posted a pair of assists in the thrilling 5-4 overtime loss to the Bulldogs, equaling her previous season high.
The Antioch, Illinois, native picked up her first assist on a power-play goal off the stick of
Meghan Fonfara '18, which gave Elmira its only lead of the contest, 2-1, at the 4:42 mark of the second period. EC won a faceoff in the offensive zone and the puck was passed to Chivers at the top of the slot. After swinging it to the right wing side, she then passed it back to the left side to
Maddie Evangelous '19, who ripped a shot from the faceoff circle to Fonfara at the near post for the deflection.
The reigning AHCA All-American defender also received her second point of the game on special teams, as her pass to
Maddy Jerolman '19 set up a breakaway opportunity for her classmate, which knotted the score at 4-4 late in the third period. Chivers gathered the puck behind the net and cleared it down the right-wing side. That pass caromed off the boards to a streaking Jerolman, who raced by her defender and snuck a shot five-hole past Adrian goalie Brooke Gibson.
Chivers finished her sophomore season tied for seventh in the ECAC West in defenseman scoring with three goals and 12 assists for 15 points, while she played a key role on a defensive unit that ranked second in the league and ninth in all of Division III with a mere 1.43 goals allowed per game.
