Carlin, Tracey Named EC Athletes of the Week

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Emily Carlin '17 of the softball team and Patrick Tracey '18 of the men's tennis team have been awarded Elmira College Athlete of the Week accolades for their performances during the week ending April 23.

Carlin's efforts at the plate and in the pitcher's circle guided the Soaring Eagles to a trio of victories, beginning on April 17 with a doubleheader sweep against Alfred State in Alfred, New York. In the nightcap, she saved EC's 12-11 win with 0.2 scoreless innings of relief. In that game, she was also 1-for-1 with one walk and one run scored. In her next two starts, the Riverside, California, native threw a pair of complete games at Ithaca College on April 22 and against Stevens Institute of Technology on April 23. Although she took the loss to the Bombers, Carlin slugged her 12th career home run, second-most all-time in program history and just one shy of the record held by Erin Pruess '12 (13).

The senior utility player capped off her week with a strong outing in the nightcap against the Ducks on Sunday. Thanks to Carlin's career effort at the dish and tremendous pitching out of the bullpen, Elmira downed Stevens by a final score of 4-3, the first victory for the Purple and Gold over the Ducks since the 2013 season. She drove in all four of EC's runs and established a new single-game career high with four RBIs. In the pitcher's circle, she tossed 3.1 scoreless innings of relief, surrendered just two hits, and struck out two en route to her third victory of the season.

Carlin is one of only four players on the softball team to start all 19 games this season. She's second on the team in hits (12), RBIs (10), extra-base hits (3), and on-base percentage (.400). Her on-base streak was extended to 15 consecutive games, the longest streak in her career and just two games shy of the longest such streak by a Soaring Eagle over the past four seasons. The Soaring Eagles will conclude play inside the Empire 8 this week, as Elmira hosts Houghton College at Eldridge Park Stadium on Wednesday, April 26. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.

Tracey went 4-2 in a trio of Empire 8 Conference matches this past week, helping the Soaring Eagles keep their playoff hopes alive with league victories over Utica College and Alfred University. The junior netter picked up a pair of straight-set singles wins at the No. 3 position against the Pioneers and Saxons, the latter of which capped a season-high five-match singles winning streak. All five wins during that stretch came in straight sets, four of which were against conference opponents. Aside from a setback to No. 39-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday, Tracey teamed up with rookie Theo Tran '20 for a pair of convincing doubles victories in which the duo won 16-of-17 games played at the No. 1 position.

Tracey leads the Soaring Eagles this season in total wins (19) and singles victories (10). His 19 total wins are tied for fifth-most in single-season program history with former five-time E8 All-Conference honoree, Gabe Cortes '11, and are just two shy of moving him into a tie for first place. Tracey's 10 singles victories are also tied for fourth in EC history and are three shy of tying his own record-setting total of 13, which he produced during his sophomore season in 2015-16.

The Bardonia, New York, native will look to continue his strong play this week, as the Purple and Gold take on Houghton College and St. John Fisher College in a pair of league matches. Both contests are must-wins for the Soaring Eagles, who look to move from fifth place in the conference standings and into a top-four playoff spot. EC hosts the Highlanders of Houghton in the team's home finale on Tuesday, April 25, at 4:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Center, before traveling to Rochester, New York, to take on the Cardinals of St. John Fisher in the 2016-17 regular-season finale on Saturday, April 29, at 1:00 p.m.
