Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College women's basketball team (2-2) turned an eight point halftime lead into a 78-55 win over non-conference opponent Keystone College (2-1). Elmira's 33 point margin of victory is their largest since the 2011-12 season.
Fourth-year standout guard
Jessica Zoltowski '14 led the Soaring Eagles with a strong double-double effort, recording 28 points and 12 rebounds, both season highs. Of Zoltwoski's 28 points, 18 came in the second half alone.
In addition to Zoltowski's double-double performance, Elmira also had two others finish with double digit points, including
Meghan Loya '16 who scored 14 and
Maria Thannhauser '14 who added another 11.
Elmira controlled most of the first half of play as Keystone only led at the beginning of the game and would only get as close as one point with 1:07 remaining. However, Elmira regrouped in the final minute of play as Zoltwoski,
Tempestt Black '14 and Thannhauser combined for seven points, giving the Soaring Eagles an eight point edge at the half.
The Soaring Eagles dominated the second half of play, holding Keystone to just 22.9% shooting from the field while making 50% of their own shots. A key scoring run for the Purple and Gold came during a stretch from 14:32 to the 6:19 mark when Elmira outscored Keystone 28-7, giving EC a commanding 75-42 lead at the time which would eventually lead to a 78-55 win.
Credit a large part of Elmira's success in the second half to their defensive pressure as EC scored 22 points off turnovers in the half.
Elmira will have a little over a week before they are back on the hardwood as their next game is scheduled for Monday, December 2nd when the Soaring Eagles travel to take on the Sage Colleges. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. in Troy, NY.
