Yakel Nets Three as Women’s Lacrosse Falls to King’s

Wilkes-Barre, PA -- The Elmira College women's lacrosse team saw a one-goal first half lead turn into a three-goal loss as the Soaring Eagles dropped a non-conference road tilt to King's College (PA), 11-8.

Elmira had a pair of players record career-highs this afternoon, including Kara Yakel '16 who scored a career-high three goals.  Entering today's contest, Yakel had yet to score a goal in her collegiate career.  Kylie Connell '17 finished today's contest with a career-high four points on one goal and a career-high three assists.

Although the Monarchs of King's held a 29-18 advantage in shots this afternoon, Elmira was more accurate with their shooting, putting 12 of their 18 shots on frame.  Elmira also did well controlling draws today, as the Soaring Eagles held a slim 11-to-10 edge, including an 8-to-4 lead in that category in the first half.

The Soaring Eagles opened the first half with a 1-0 lead behind a goal from Marisa Carr '18, her first of two goals.  Following Carr's goal, EC and King's would trade goals until the score stood at 4-3, with Moorea Spoljaric '16, Yakel, and Carr each scoring for the Purple and Gold.

From there, the Monarchs scored three straight before Spoljaric ended the half with an unassisted goal, sending the game into halftime with Elmira trailing, 6-5.

Trailing by just one goal, EC looked to even things up in the second half but King's would score back-to-back goals to open the half, taking an 8-5 lead.  However, Elmira's Yakel and Connell scored consecutive goals, trimming the Monarch lead to 8-7 with 19:41 to play in regulation.

Unfortunately, this would be as close as Elmira would get as King's closed the game by outscoring the Purple and Gold, 3-to-1, sealing an 11-8 victory.

Lindsay Wargo '17 got the start in net for Elmira this afternoon and would make five saves in the contest.

Elmira will be back in action this Tuesday, March 17th when the Purple and Gold travel to take on the University of Rochester in a non-conference game.  The opening draw is set for 4:00 p.m. in Rochester, NY.
