James McGuire

James McGuire enters his second season as the Head Men's and Women's Tennis Coach and Administrative Assistant. McGuire was named the 2013 Empire 8 Women's Tennis Coach of the Year.

McGuire led the 2013 EC Women’s Tennis team to one of their greatest seasons in recent memory as the Soaring Eagles amassed an 8-4 overall record, EC’s best record in over 13 years, and clinched the three seed in the Empire 8 Conference Tournament, the highest seed Elmira has earned in program history.  Mcguire also saw Amy Schmidt ’15 reach the second round of the prestigious USTA-ITA Northeast Regional Championship, making Schmidt the first female player in Elmira history to win a main draw singles match.

McGuire, a 2010 graduate of Western Illinois University in Macomb, IL, joins the Soaring Eagles after one season as the Assistant Men’s Tennis Coach at the University of Rochester. During his tenure with the Yellow Jackets he assisted the head coach with scouting, recruitment, player development drills, individual technique coaching, and revamping an off-season weight and conditioning program. McGuire also spent one year as the Volunteer Assistant Coach at Western Illinois University as he finished his undergraduate degree.

In addition to coaching at the college level, McGuire’s tennis experience includes working as an instructor at the Tennis Club of Rochester where he assisted with the operation of a summer day-camp for the Pee Wee, Beginner, Advanced Beginner, Intermediate, Junior Varsity and Varsity level players. McGuire also served as a tennis instructor for three years at the U.S. Naval Academy.

McGuire played Division I tennis at two universities between 2006 and 2010. As a player at Western Illinois, he was the Team Captain for the 2009-2010 season, was the recipient of the Art Peterson Leadership Award in 2009, and attained the Fighter First award in 2008. He also was named to the Summit League All-Academic team in 2010. Prior to transferring to Western Illinois, McGuire also played at the University of Rhode Island where he recorded a team-best 19-10 singles record as a freshman. He also recorded 17 wins in doubles play as a sophomore.
