Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Piku’s Career Afternoon Highlights 6-0 Rout of Manhattanville

College Hockey Stats Box Score

Northfield, VT --
The Elmira College women's ice hockey team (2-0-0) used a three-goal second period to down Manhattanville College (0-2-0), 6-0.  With the win, Elmira exits the East-West Classic, the premier season opening tournament in the country, with a perfect 2-0-0 record, EC's best start to a season since 2009-10. Additionally, today's 6-0 defeat of Manhattanville is the most lopsided victory either team has had in their 26 meetings.

The Soaring Eagles has several players with standout performances today, including defender Phoebe Piku '16, who finished with a career-high three points on one goal and two assists.  Her two assists are also a career-best.

Piku was one of 10 Elmira skaters to record at least one point today, as well as one of two to log multiple points.  Ashton Hogan '15 was the other Soaring Eagle with multiple points this afternoon as she finished with two points on one goal and one assist.

Elmira controlled the entirety of today's matchup, outshooting the Valiants 34-to-15.  Credit the Elmira defense for playing a major role in the lopsided stat line as they held Manhattanville to just seven shots on goal through the first two periods, allowing freshman netminder, Kelcey Crawford '18, to ease her way into her first collegiate game.  Crawford would stop all 15 shots she saw to earn her first collegiate victory as well as her first career shutout.

The scoring today started at the 10:49 mark of the first period on an Olivia Nystrom '16 power play goal, her first goal of the 2014-15 season.  Assisting on the game-opening, and game-winning goal, was Piku, giving EC a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

Then, the flood gates opened in the second period as the Soaring Eagles peppered Manhattanville with 17 shots on goal, an effort that eventually led to three goals being scored in the period.

Rookie Arianna Smith '18 got things started for Elmira in the second period as her goal at the 5:08 mark sparked Elmira's three-goal outburst.  Smith's goal was assisted by Piku, her second assist of the game.  Then, a little over four minutes later, Piku scored a goal of her own on an assist from Anna Tude '17, to put the Purple and Gold ahead, 3-0.

At the 12:02 mark of the second period, Hogan put the Soaring Eagles ahead 4-0 as she scored her second goal in as many days.  Assisting on Hogan's goal was Sydney Fischer '17.  Hogan's goal was the final goal of the period, giving the Purple and Gold three scores in a seven-minute span.

With a four-goal cushion, Elmira continued to apply pressure on a resilient Manhattanville team that has shown early on this season that they are fighters after pushing the No. 1 team in the nation, Plattsburgh State, to the brink yesterday, losing to the Cardinals by just one goal, 5-4.

Elmira had no plans of letting the Valiants back in this one as they piled it on with a pair of power play goals in the third period to seal a 6-0 win.  Scoring for Elmira in the third were Cassidy Delainey '15 and Erin Weston '15.  Delainey's goal was her second in as many days while Weston's was her first of the 2014-15 campaign.  Picking up assists on the two scores was Hogan, Ashley Ryan '15, and Brooke Wilgosh '15.  For Ryan, her point total has now reached 99, putting her just one point away from becoming the ninth player in EC history to reach the 100-point plateau.

The Soaring Eagles will have just about two weeks to enjoy this weekend's wins as Elmira plays next on Saturday, November 15th when the Purple and Gold open ECAC West Conference play against SUNY Cortland.  Game-time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Center in Pine Valley, NY.
