Shinkaruk’s Late Goal Guides Elmira to 4-4 Overtime Tie against Nazareth

College Hockey Stats Box Score

Elmira, NY --
Carter Shinkaruk '16 scored two goals tonight for the Elmira College men's ice hockey team (3-4-2, 2-2-2 ECAC West), but his second goal would be the biggest of them all as his late goal with 20 seconds remaining in the third period helped guide the Soaring Eagles to a 4-4 overtime tie against visiting Nazareth College (4-4-3, 3-1-2 ECAC West).

Elmira held a decisive advantage in shots tonight, outshooting Nazareth 51-to-37, including a 26-shot effort in the second period.  Both teams would also have ample opportunities with extra skaters as the two teams both went 2-for-7 on power-play chances.

The Golden Flyers jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 2:24 into the contest on a goal by Dominik Gabaj.  Nazareth's goal was a result of good defense as a forced turnover at center ice resulted in two-on-one odd-man rush.  On the odd-man rush, Rocky Gruttadauria would fire a close range shot that would be saved by Magliocco but the rebound would find its way to Gabaj who knocked-in the loose puck for a quick 1-0 lead.

Elmira wasted little time to respond as the Soaring Eagles knotted things at 1-1 at the 4:46 mark on a goal by Andrew Ciampichini '15.  The Soaring Eagle score was setup by a long pass from EC's defensive zone that would find Ciampichini by the Nazareth blue line.  From there, Ciampichini fired a shot that was blocked by a defender but the puck would come back to him, allowing Ciampichini to deke Nazareth goalie Ed Zdolshek, beating him glove side on a nice one-on-one move.

Both team's would have power-play chances in the final 15:14 of the period, but neither would be able to convert with the extra skater as the game remained tied 1-1 entering the first intermission.

5:03 into the second period, Tommy Sumi '16 put the Soaring Eagles ahead 2-1 on a power-play goal.  On the power play, Alexander Taulien '17 would pass the puck behind the net to Jarryd ten Vaanholt '16 who dumped the puck to Sumi who would bury a slap shot from the right faceoff circle for the power-play goal.

A resilient Nazareth squad answered once again, this time at the 9:29 mark on a goal Oliver Janzen.  The Golden Flyer goal looked like it would hold up through the end of the period but Carter Shinkaruk '16 would score the go-ahead goal in the closing seconds of the second period. Shinkaruk's goal was created on a three-on-three rush, where he would send home a one-time wrist shot on a pass from Brian Depp '16.  Eric David '15 would also be credited with an assist on the Shinkaruk goal.  EC would go on to carry their 3-2 lead into the final intermission.

With a one goal lead, the Soaring Eagles looked create separation from the Golden Flyers and nearly did so at the 6:15 mark when Ciampichini had a one-on-one with Zdolshek but the Nazareth goalie proved to be up for the challenge as he stopped Ciampichini's shot.

Power-play chances would be a big factor the rest of the way out as Nazareth knocked-in a pair of power-play goals at the 8:02 and 12:45 marks of the period, giving the Golden Fylers at 4-3 lead.

With the game coming to a close and Elmira's backs against the wall, Nazareth's Ryan Walter would be called for a tripping penalty with 1:58 to play in regulation, giving Elmira an extra skater for the remainder of the third period.

At the 1:09 mark of the period, Elmria would pull Magliocco from net, giving the Soaring Eagles a 6-on-4 advantage for the remainder of regulation.  The move by Coach Aaron Saul '98 proved to be a good one as Shinkaruk would score the game-tying goal with 20 seconds to play.  Shinkaruk's game-tying goal was assisted by David and ten Vaanholt.

EC netminder Sal Magliocco '17 would make 30 saves in tonight's contest, bringing his season record to 2-1-2.

Elmira will look to build on today's tie as the Soaring Eagles will take on Wesleyan University tomorrow at the First Arena in Elmira, NY as part of the Home for Holidays Downtown Event.  The puck is set to drop at 3:00 p.m.
