College Hockey Stats Box Score
Elmira, NY -- Playing at the First Arena in downtown Elmira, NY for the first time in program history, the Elmira College women's ice hockey team (9-1-0, 6-0-0 ECAC West) skated away with a convincing 8-1 victory over visiting SUNY Potsdam (2-6-1, 2-6-1 ECAC West). Elmira outshot Potsdam by a wide margin today, 55-to-17, and also held an edge on special teams as the Soaring Eagles scored a pair of power-play goals to the Bears' one extra-man score.
The Soaring Eagles took a quick 1-0 lead 3:38 into the first period on a goal from
Anna Tude '17. Working in the slot, Tude would redirect a
Marissa Mongillo '15 shot from the blue line for the score.
Phoebe Piku '16 and Mongillo were credited with assists on Tude's goal.
A little over 12 minutes later, Elmira increased their lead to 2-0 as
Cassidy Delainey '15 scored her first of two power-play goals. Delainey's score was a product of pure effort as she fought for the puck in a scrum in front of the Potsdam goal, eventually knocking-in what would be today's game-winner.
Ashton Hogan '15 and
Ashley Ryan '15 picked up assists on the eventual game-winning goal.
Potsdam cut the Elmira lead to one at the 2:05 mark of the second period on a goal from Kady Hart. However, this would be the only score of the night for the Bears as the Soaring Eagles scored six unanswered goals to close out the game.
Hogan would score the first of six unanswered goals in the second period at the 7:22 and 11:22 marks of the period. Hogan's first goal came on a heads-up play by Ryan, who stole the puck at Elmira's blue line and made a long pass to Hogan, who would beat the Potsdam goalie on a one-on-one opportunity,
At the 11:22 mark, Hogan would collect the puck after a saved shot by
Erin Kishoni '18, and carry it from the left faceoff circle towards the net before beating the Potsdam goalie with a wrist shot for her second goal of the afternoon. Kishoni and Ryan tallied assists on Hogan's goal.
Two minutes later, Delainey would score her NCAA Division III-leading sixth power-play goal to put the Soaring Eagles ahead 5-1.
Brooke Wilgosh '15 helped setup the goal with a pass from the point to Ryan on the right side of the ice. From there, Ryan would send the puck into a crowd of skaters in front of the Potsdam goal, allowing Delainey to redirect the shot into the back of the net for the score.
Sarah Hughson '18 increased Elmira's lead in the second period at the 17:17 mark by scoring her second goal of the season. The scoring play started in Elmira's defensive zone in a sea of skaters next to the boards, but Wilgosh would free the puck by kicking it to Hughson, who sent a pass up ice to Ryan. From there, Ryan split a pair of defenders and dumped the puck to a rushing Hughson for a one-timer that beat the Potsdam goalie glove side.
Hughson's goal would be the final score of the second period as the Soaring Eagles carried a hefty 6-1 lead into the final intermission.
Potsdam would make a change in net to start the third period, subbing Abby Tardelli for starter Brianna Fiddler, but the move would make little difference as Elmira opened the scoring 7:16 into the third period on an unassisted goal by Piku.
Elmira's final score of the afternoon came at the 13:19 mark of the third as a string of passes by
Jessica Prance '17 and
Lindsay Burrows '15 would find
Sydney Fischer '17 all alone in the slot. Working in the slot with the puck, Fischer fired a shot towards net and beat Tardelli bar-down for the score.
EC starting netminder
Kelcey Crawford '18 made 16 saves in today's contest as she improved to 4-0-0 in her rookie campaign.
Today's game was the final one of 2014 for the Soaring Eagles as they next compete in the New Year on January 3rd when Elmira hosts No. 5 Middlebury College for a 3:00 p.m. game at the Murray Athletic Center Ice Arena.
