Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Controversial Plays Shape Men’s Ice Hockey’s 5-3 Loss to Brockport

College Hockey Stats Box Score

Pine Valley, NY --
In a game that saw 13 penalties, 56 penalty minutes, and two game misconducts, it would be the College at Brockport (8-5-1) who would skate away with a 5-3 win over Elmira College (6-5-2).  With the loss, Elmira's mini three-game win streak comes to a halt while Brockport extended their win streak to six games.

Tonight's game was filled with controversial calls, headlined by an Elmira goal being taken off the board for a player in the crease late in the game.  Regardless, tonight's game was played at a high level as both teams combined for 74 shots, 45 for Elmira and 29 for Brockport.  The Soaring Eagles would go 2-for-4 on power-play chances while the Golden Eagles went 3-for-6.

At the 2:46 mark of the first period, Michael Collins '16 was called for a minor slashing penalty, putting the Soaring Eagles on the penalty kill early in the game.  However, a selfless play by Liam Burtt '16 would produce the game's first goal as Burtt sacrificed his body to block a shot from the point, with the loose puck finding its way to Tommy Sumi '16.  From there, Sumi carried the puck into the Brockport defensive zone and fired an absolute laser into the upper left corner of the net, beating Brockport goalie Aaron Green over his right shoulder, giving the Purple and Gold a 1-0 edge just 4:21 into the game.  Sumi's shorthanded goal is Elmira's second consecutive game with a shorthanded goal and EC's third in the last four games.

Elmira's 1-0 lead was short lived as Brockport evened the game at the 4:55 mark of the first period on a goal by Robbie Hall. James Ryan extended Brockport's lead to 2-1 at the 13:34 mark of the period on a power-play goal.

With the period coming to a close, Brockport's Bobby Chayka was called for a five-minute major penalty for contact to the head as well as a game misconduct.  Regardless, Brockport would carry their 2-1 lead into the first intermission.

The Soaring Eagles took advantage of the extra skater in the second period as Greg Whittle '16 evened the game at 2-2 with a monstrous slap shot for a power-play goal.  Whittle's goal, which was scored 1:12 into the period, was assisted by Alexander Taulien '17 and Sumi.

Brockport would eventually kill the five-minute major penalty with allowing just one goal, but upon returning to the ice, the Golden Eagles were called for too many men for leaving the penalty box too early, giving EC another power-play opportunity.

On the power play, Andrew Ciampichini '15 won an offensive zone faceoff with Michael Collins '16 recovering the puck in the zone.  Collins would swing a pass over to Rob Simpson '16 who quickly dished it back to Collins, who one-timed a slap shot from the blue line that made its way through traffic for another power-play score, putting the Soaring Eagles ahead 3-2.  Both Simpson and Ciampichini were credited with assists on the goal.

Less than two minutes later, Taulien was called for a checking from behind five-minute major penalty as well as a game misconduct, giving the Golden Eagles a prime opportunity to get back into tonight's game.  The five-minute major proved to be key tonight as Brockport's Jesse Facchini knocked-in a power-play goal, the first of three unanswered goals, at the 11:42 mark to even things at 3-3.

The Soaring Eagles would go on another power play at the 13:17 mark of the second period but the Golden Eagles would score shorthanded on the Elmira power-play to take a 4-3 lead into the final intermission.

Elmira looked to even things in the third period but another Brockport power-play goal, a controversial one, at the 16:33 mark of the period gave the Golden Eagles a two-goal cushion.  The controversy on the play came when Ciampichini collided with Brockport's goalie and a delayed penalty was called for charging but in the following seconds, it looked as though EC's Simpson touched the puck, which should have ended the play.  However, there was no whistle on the play, which allowed Brockport to knock-in their third power-play goal of the evening.

With 57 seconds remaining in regulation, Elmira Head Coach Aaron Saul '98 called a timeout to try and draw up an offensive zone play to cut into Brockport's lead.  Following the timeout, Coach Saul pulled Sal Magliocco '17 from net, giving EC an extra attacker.  On the next play, Jarryd ten Vaanholt '16 buried a one-time shot but the goal was called back for Elmira having a player in the crease, another controversial call, which all but sealed Brockport's 5-3 win.

Magliocco finished the night with 24 saves while Brockport netminder Aaron Green came up with 42 stops.

The Elmira men will be back in action on Tuesday, January 13th when the Soaring Eagles take on their fourth consecutive SUNYAC opponent in SUNY Potsdam.  Faceoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Potsdam, NY.
