College Hockey Stats Box Score
Pine Valley, NY -- Ashley Ryan '15 scored two goals and assisted on two others to lead the Elmira College women's ice hockey team to a 5-0 win over visiting Chatham University. Ryan's four points ups her career total to 137, putting the Rochester, NY native into sole possession of sixth place on Elmira's all-time leaderboard for career points.
The Soaring Eagles controlled today's game from start to finish as indicated by the shot total, which was heavily in favor of Elmira, 52-to-8. Chatham's eight shots on goal is the least amount allowed by Elmira this season and the fewest since the 2012-13 season when Elmira held Buffalo State to just six shots on frame.
Elmira got on the board first, in the first period, as
Erin Weston '15 forced a turnover in Chatham's defensive zone, allowing
Louisa Lippiatt Durnell '18 to find
Ashley Ryan '15 in the slot. From there, Ryan fired a wrist shot into the upper right corner of the net, beating Chatham goaltender, Sydney Isbell, glove-side for the goal at the 1:57 mark of the first period.
Less than two minutes later,
Anna Tude '17 worked her way into the slot and buried a wrist shot to put the Soaring Eagles ahead 2-0. Classmates
Kyra McDonald '18 and
Sarah Hughson '18 picked up assists on Tude's goal, which would hold up through the end of the first period.
In the second period, defense was the name of the game as both team's penalty kill units were put to the test. Elmira had three power-play chances and Chatham would have two, but both team's penalty killers would step up and deny any goals during the five power-play opportunities.
Although neither team was able to capitalize on man-up opportunities, Elmira would still manage to score another goal in the third period at the 18:15 mark as Ryan scored her second goal of the afternoon. Ryan's goal was setup by Weston who stole the puck in the neutral zone and dished it to Ryan, who would carry it into the slot before sending a shot towards net. Ryan's shot would deflect off a Chatham defender's skate and into the back of the net for the score. Elmira would take their three-goal lead into the final intermission.
Elmira wasted little time scoring their fourth goal as
Cassidy Delainey '15 scored a power-play goal 1:51 into the third period. After winning an in-zone faceoff,
Brooke Wilgosh '15 sent a pass cross-ice to Ryan. From there, Ryan fired a shot towards goal but Delainey would redirect the shot into the net for the power-play score. Both Wilgosh and Ryan picked up assists on the goal.
The final goal of the afternoon would occur at the 6:24 mark of the period as Delainey scored her national-leading 10th power-play goal of the season. Delainey's score was almost identical to her previous one in terms of how the play was setup. After winning an in-zone faceoff, Weston sent a pass cross-ice to Ryan who once again launched a shot towards goal, allowing Delainey to tip the shot into the net for the score. Delainey's goal would be the final one of the period as Elmira cruised to a 5-0 victory.
EC starting goaltender,
Kyle Nelson '17, did not face much pressure today but still managed to accumulate eight saves en route to her first shutout victory of the season.
The Soaring Eagles will look for a repeat performance tomorrow afternoon when the Purple and Gold host Chatham University for another ECAC West Conference contest. Faceoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Center Ice Arena.
