Rochester, NY -- The Elmira College field hockey team concluded its non-conference road slate on Tuesday evening when it traveled to face the University of Rochester. It was a difficult night for the Soaring Eagles against the perennial regional power, falling to the Yellowjackets 8-0.
Elmira's starting keeper,
Julie Hockenberger '18, was under siege for most of the first half. The Yellowjackets fired 18 shot attempts in the opening half, including 10 on target. The second-year netminder finished with nine saves in her 35 minutes of work; however, the Yellowjackets took a commanding 5-0 lead to the break.
Nicole Cerza got the home side on the scoreboard in the fourth minute of play, her first of two goals in the contest, when she slid home a rebound of a shot off a penalty corner opportunity. Callie Fisher added a second goal in the 11
th minute of play, slotting in a shot from the left side of the arc into the bottom right of the cage. Mimi Adar sent in the third from the left wing, while Cerza potted her second of the half on a tap-in of a backdoor pass from Adar. Michelle Relin capped the opening half scoring with a goal off a rebound in the 34
th minute.
The scoring continued for the Yellowjackets early in the second half. Fisher and Relin both added their second goals of the game in the opening five minutes of the second session. Kathryn Montgomery capped the scoring for the home side with a tap-in of a textbook give-and-go with Olivia Denny.
Mikayla Rebusmen '17 finished with four saves coming on in relief for the final 35 minutes.
Turning PointThe Yellowjackets had firm control of the contest from the outset; however, Elmira continued to hang within striking distance late into the opening half. The University of Rochester would blow the game open when Mimi Adar and Nicole Cerza scored goals 2:20 apart in the 28
th and 30
th minutes, respectively.
Inside the Box Score- Rochester outshot Elmira 31-to-7 in the contest, including a 21-to-4 edge in shots on goal.
- Elmira was much stronger in the second half, generating six of its seven total shot attempts after halftime.
- Rochester held a decisive 13-to-1 advantage in penalty corner opportunities.
- The Yellowjackets had a 9-to-0 edge in penalty corners in the first half.
- Michelle Relin led all players with eight shot attempts, with seven going on target. Relin, Fisher and Cerza each finished with two goals apiece.
- Alli Gilbert '16 led the Soaring Eagles with three shot attempts, with two going on goal.
News and Notes- Elmira was shutout for the fourth straight contest. It's the longest stretch the program has seen without a goal since failing to score in four straight during the stretch run of the 2010 season.
- The eight goal margin was the most lopsided loss for Elmira since falling to Utica College 8-0 on September 20th of last season.
