Wilkes-Barre, PA -- The Elmira College men's soccer team looked to return to their winning ways tonight but the Soaring Eagles hit a roadblock in the form of King's College (PA), as the Monarchs earned a 2-0 victory at McCarthy Stadium in Wilkes-Barre, PA. Elmira's
Kevin Huggins '16 made five saves in tonight's contest.
EC began the night in good form, as two of their first three shots of the game found their way on frame. Both shots on goal were saved however by King's goalkeeper Owen Geedy, who made the pair of saves in the game's opening 20 minutes.
King's nearly broke through in the 30th minute, when Raul Cruz headed a ball that looked to beat EC's Huggins. Cruz's header attempt, which was created on a corner kick opportunity, was saved at the last second by an Elmira defender to keep the game knotted a 0-0.
However, Cruz's close call was just a sign of things to come from the Monarch offense, as Brendan Raab scored from 15 yards out in the opening two minutes of the second half to give King's a 1-0 lead. The Monarchs would add to that lead in the 70th minute on a Brian Fenster goal, which all but sealed a 2-0 win for the home team.
Turning PointElmira hung tough with a King's squad that had won seven of its last nine contests, including a victory over No. 8 nationally ranked, and previously unbeaten, Eastern University in their most recent outing. EC played the Monarchs to a 0-0 score line through the first half but the first two minutes of the second stanza proved to be disastrous for the Soaring Eagles, as Brendan Raab scored the eventual game-winning goal for King's.
