Pine Valley, NY -- Following last night's heartbreaker in overtime, the Elmira College men's ice hockey team was right back in action this evening when Manhattanville College invaded the Murray Athletic Center. In what was a heated contest between the two ECAC West rivals, it was the Valiants that would stun the Soaring Eagles with a big second period en route to a 4-1 road win.
Although it was a forgettable night for Elmira, a couple young Soaring Eagles posted some solid showings.
Mitch Atkins '19 broke up Manhattanville's shutout bid with 4:48 remaining, rifling in his first collegiate goal. Elmira also started a fresh face in the net on the evening. Sandro Aeschliman '19 showed flashes of brilliance in his first collegiate start, finishing with 27 saves.
Tempers flared right from the get-go on Saturday evening, as the team's combined for 16 penalties and 80 penalty minutes in the opening period. Matters boiled over at the 14:07 mark of the period.
Greg Whittle '16 whipped a hard shot on net that Manhattanville net-minder, Kyle Redmond, briefly bobbled as he attempted to freeze it for a whistle. Whittle and
Tommy Sumi '16 crashed the net hard in an effort to poke the puck free, but the Valiants were not enthused, as a big brawl ensued. Sumi and Whittle, as well as the Valiants' Phil Dinner and Eric Berglund, were docked with 10 minute misconducts. The boxes filled further when
Michael Collins '16 and Manhattanville's Tanner Hicks were also given 10-minute misconducts for reigniting the scuffle as the team's attempted to resume play.
Outside of the fisticuffs, first-year goaltender
Sandro Aeschlimann '19 was a human highlight reel in the opening 20 minutes. He made a dazzling glove save on Eric Berglund at the 10:21 mark of the period. His best stop of the period came on a roll over windmill kick save on the Valiants' Adam Platt, while the net-minder was sprawled on his back at the side of the net. The score would remain scoreless into the intermission.
The second period was decisively in favor of the visitors, as the Valiants would tally four times in the middle 20 minutes. Manhattanville would break the ice on the scoreboard at the 5:28 mark of the period on Bryan Platt's first of the season. Matt Coleman, who was briefly shaken up following a big collision with Elmira's
Brian Depp '16 in the first period, started the play with deft stick lift to steal the puck as the Soaring Eagles looked to exit the zone. He peeled around into the the right circle, before firing a shot on goal. Aeschlimann looked to have secured the puck, but it would find its way between his pads, coming to a rest along the goal line. Platt quickly reacted, crashing the net hard to the far post to poke in the rebound.
The initial goal seemed to shock the Soaring Eagles; Manhattanville made them pay just 43 seconds after Platt's tally, doubling the lead. The Valiants' Cory Anderson sprung the visitors on a quick counter with a stretch pass to Hicks who streamed down the right wing. He picked out Matt Lippa with a perfect cross-ice pass, which Lippa pumped past the Elmira goaltender who was just late sliding right-to-left to make the stop.
Manhattanville would strike for two more, also coming in quick succession, midway through the period. Charlie Ryde would one-time a pass from Anderson into the twine, while Eric Berglund would stretch the lead to 4-0 with the Valiants working on a five-on-three advantage.
Penalties continued to be a theme on the evening, as Elmira was given three consecutive power plays to close out the middle period and begin the third. Unlike last night, Elmira's special teams were unable to make much of the chances. Elmira would go 0-for-6 with the man advantage on the evening.
With the game well in hand, the Purple and Gold spoiled Manhattanville's shutout bid with 4:48 remaining in what was Elmira's best shift of the evening.
Rob Simpson '16, who showed excellent jump throughout the contest, made a nice outlet pass to Depp who charged down the right wing. The senior fed a perfect cross-ice pass to the blade of Atkins in the left circle. He loaded up a wrister and picked the top corner inside the right post.
Turning PointWith the game locked in a scoreless tie, Manhattanville would strike for two goals in the span of 43 seconds to break the game open. Platt would chip home a rebound, which Elmira net-minder Sandro Aeschliman '16 believed to have frozen. The Soaring Eagles struggled to rebound from the sudden deficit, falling asleep on the ensuing shift, which Manhattanville would take advantage of with a quick counter-attack resulting in Lippa's goal.
