Rochester, NY -- The Elmira College softball team (2-4, 0-4 Empire 8) fell in a pair of Empire 8 Conference games to St. John Fisher College (17-5, 3-1 Empire 8). Elmira took an 8-0 loss in five innings in game one before being edged 3-0 in the second leg of today's doubleheader.
Game One: St. John Fisher 8, Elmira 0 (F/5)It did not take St. John Fisher long to find their rhythm from the plate as the Cardinals scored all of their game's eight runs in the first three innings, including a six-run second inning. The play that broke the game wide open was a three-run home run by Meghan Burns in the second inning, a homer that gave Fisher a 6-0 lead at the time.
Elmira struggled at the plate as Fisher's starting pitcher, Lindsey Thayer, held the Soaring Eagles without a hit through five full innings. The lone bright spot in game one for Elmira was the pitching efforts of
Emily Carlin '17, who came in for relief duty in the second inning. Carlin tossed 2.1 innings and allowed just one run.
Game Two: St. John Fisher 3, Elmira 0The Cardinals jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a pair of RBI singles. Down by a pair of runs,
Ashley Palmer '16 led-off the top of the second with a single that made its way through the middle of Fisher's infield. Palmer would reach second on a sacrifice bunt but that would be as far as she would make it as the Cardinals kept EC's bats at-bay.
Fisher scored another run in the bottom of the third to take a 3-0 lead.
In the final four innings, Elmira put two runners in scoring position but neither was able to make it home as the Soaring Eagles fell to the Cardinals, 3-0.
Katie McDougal '18 got the start in game two and would pitch six innings, allowing three runs on 11 hits.
The Soaring Eagles will look to snap a four-game losing streak this Friday, April 17th as EC hosts Alfred University in an Empire 8 Conference doubleheader. The first of two games is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Eldridge Park Stadium in Elmira, NY.
