Rochester, NY -- Elmira College was held off the scoreboard for the first time this season on Tuesday afternoon, as the Soaring Eagles were blanked by RIT 2-0.
The Tigers struck for a goal in each half in the tightly contested game. Unfortunately, the Soaring Eagles found themselves unable to capitalize on their chances despite ultimately finishing with more shots on frame.
After an evenly played opening 20 minutes, the Soaring Eagles were caught in a difficult situation in their own box, conceding a penalty kick opportunity. Gene Sicoli took the kick for RIT, driving a low shot into the bottom right of the frame, as Elmira keeper
Kevin Huggins '16 sprawled the opposite direction, to stake the Tigers to a 1-0 lead in the 23
rd minute.
Elmira pushed hard for an equalizer coming out of the gates to begin the second session. The Soaring Eagles launched 11 shot attempts in the final 45-minutes of play, but were unable to find an equalizer, as RIT keeper Peter Cinibulk made five saves to maintain the clean sheet.
Elmira's comeback bid took a fatal hit in the 75
th-minute as Akram Meza doubled the Tigers lead. Sicoli played an excellent through ball to put Meza in on goal. Huggins did well to cut the angle, but Meza's shot had just enough power to squeeze through the keeper's legs and inside the post.
Turning PointWith Elmira looking the stronger side during their comeback bid in the second half, RIT was able to double its lead to effectively seal the game. Akram Meza's shot had just enough on it to get through the legs of EC keeper
Kevin Huggins '16, sneaking inside the post. The two goal lead proved too much to overcome with just 15-minutes left to play.
