Oneonta, NY -- The Elmira College women's basketball scored a season-low 36 points against Hartwick College, as the Hawks defeated the Soaring Eagles 63-36 at Lambros Arena Saturday afternoon.
The Soaring Eagles did grab a one-point lead at the end of a low-scoring first quarter, as
Danielle Cleary '18 drained a trey with 38 seconds remaining in the opening period. The Hawks responded by outscoring EC 42-16 in the second and third quarters to run away with the game. The Purple and Gold finished the game shooting a mere 10-for-39 (25.6 percent) from the field in its worst offensive outing of the year.
Turning PointElmira's negligence handling the ball has been an issue all season, and it put the Soaring Eagles in a big hole again Saturday. The Soaring Eagles turned the ball over 19 times in the first half. In the second quarter alone, the Purple and Gold coughed the ball up nine times, resulting in 15 points off of turnovers for the Hawks.
Inside the Box- Elmira's offense struggled against the Hawks, shooting only 25.6 percent (10-for-39) from the field while turning the ball over 27 times.
- Hartwick registered a 45.3 field-goal percentage (24-for-53).
- EC won the battle on the glass, grabbing 34 rebounds to Hartwick's 31.
- Cleary led the Soaring Eagles with 12 points and two steals.
- Meghan Loya '16 scored eight points, including a perfect 4-for-4 effort from the foul line, and hauled in eight rebounds.
- Two Hawks scored double-digit points, led by Jacqui Foreman with 14.
- Foreman also had five of Hartwick's 11 steals.
News and Notes- EC's 36 points are a season low, one point less than the 37-point output against SUNY Cortland on December 9, 2015.
- The 25.6 field-goal percentage is also the worst of the season.
- Elmira's plus-three margin in rebounds mark the first time EC outrebounded its opponent since the Soaring Eagles recorded a plus-10 margin in the win over SUNY Potsdam on December 12, 2015.
- The loss is the most lopsided in the series versus Hartwick since the Hawks defeated the Purple and Gold 63-39 in the finale of the 2010-11 season.
- The 10 made field goals are the fewest for Elmira since the Soaring Eagles only made eight in the loss to St. John Fisher College on February 6, 2015.
- Loya moved into ninth place all-time in the record books with 519 career rebounds and only needs three more to take sole possession of seventh place.
- Cleary has double-digit points in four consecutive games.
