Hoboken, NJ -- The Elmira College women's basketball team was unable to hold onto a slim second-quarter lead, as the Soaring Eagles were defeated by Stevens Institute of Technology 67-55 on the road on Saturday.
Stevens opened the first quarter with 13 unanswered points, but EC closed the opening period with a 12-2 run.
Lindsey Heaton '19 scored seven of her 13 points in the final 4:12 of the first to bring the Purple and Gold within three, 15-12. Elmira carried the momentum in the second quarter and finally took its first lead at 17-15 on an
Emily Green '18 three-pointer at the 8:47 mark. Heaton followed with a layup to give EC its largest advantage of the game.
Elmira last led the Ducks on an
Ashley Heiman '16 basket with 2:42 to play in the first half, which gave the Soaring Eagles a one-point cushion at 27-26.
Although the two teams entered the halftime break tied at 29-all, Stevens outscored Elmira 23-14 in the third period to take control of the game. The Ducks led by double digits throughout the entire fourth quarter, as the Soaring Eagles were unable to mount a comeback.
Turning PointThe Ducks dominated the glass on Saturday, out-rebounding the visiting Soaring Eagles 46-to-30. Of Stevens' 46 boards, 19 of them came on the offensive end, allowing the Ducks to score 16 second-chance points. Megan Brown did the lion's share of the work on the glass for Stevens, as the sophomore hauled in 13 rebounds in her double-double outing. However, despite the large discrepancy in rebounds,
Meghan Loya '16 was one shy of a double-double of her own.
Inside the Box- After playing to a 29-29 tie at halftime, Stevens outscored Elmira 38-26 in the second half.
- EC finished with a 34.8 field-goal percentage (16-for-46), including a 4-for-10 (40.0-percent) effort from three-point range.
- Stevens registered a 35.4 field-goal percentage off of 23-for-65 shooting.
- The Ducks out-rebounded EC 19-to-5 on the offensive glass and 46-to-30 overall.
- Elmira held a slight advantage in free throws, going 19-for-24 from the line while Stevens only had 17 makes in an equal number of attempts.
- Loya paced EC with 14 points and nine rebounds.
- Danielle Cleary '18 and Heaton each scored 13 points.
- Kaitlyn Astel scored a game-high 23 points for Stevens.
- Brown scored 11 points and grabbed 13 boards to register a double-double. She also had a game-high seven assists.
News and Notes- Loya (552) needs eight more rebounds to surpass Erin Rupell '11 (559) for sixth-place all-time in program history.
- With five free throws on Saturday, Cleary now has 96 on the season, the seventh-most in a single season in program history. She also needs one more foul shot to equal Alex Balara '15 for sixth all-time in program history.
- Loya's 14 points mark a season high and her fourth double-digit performance of the season.
- Cleary has scored double figures in eight consecutive games and in 16 of EC's 19 games this season.
- Heaton's 13 points mark her first double-digit point outing since she scored 12 against Case Western Reserve University on November 21st.
- Heaton is also perfect from the foul line in her last nine trips.
- The 67 points surrendered to Stevens are the most the Elmira defense has allowed since giving up 90 in the loss to Ithaca College on January 12th.
- Stevens is still undefeated in Empire 8 Conference play this season, improving to 9-0.
