Field Hockey Loses Second Game of Four Game Homestand

Score: SUNY Geneseo 4, Elmira College 1
Records: SUNY Geneseo (2-8), Elmira (2-7)
Location: Murray Athletic Center – Pine Valley, N.Y.

PINE VALLEY N.Y. -- Elmira College field hockey could not keep its first-half momentum, allowing three second-half goals en route to a 4-1 loss to SUNY Geneseo Saturday afternoon, at the Murray Athletic Center.

Atu Machika '18 got the first goal of the contest in the ninth minute with a tip into the bottom left corner of the cage off of a penalty corner. This was Machika's third goal of the season, and her second in the last two games.

The Soaring Eagles then amped up the defensive pressure by saving or blocking the next four shots from the Knights. Geneseo finally broke through the staunch Purple and Gold defense with a Gabriella Clare goal with 14 minutes left in the half. Clare was able to slice through the defense and sink in a shot off an impressive pass from Morgan Maley.

EC was able to keep the score tied for the rest of the first half, with third-year goalie Julie Hockenberger '18 recording three of her 10 saves in the half.

The Soaring Eagles kept up this defensive pressure for another 15 minutes, and did not allow a goal on the Knights' next seven shots. The visitors broke through for their second goal. In the 51st minute, Gabriella Clare capitalized off of a loose ball in front of the cage following a Hockenberger save and buried her shot for her second goal of the afternoon.

The Knights put the game away less than two minutes later, when Clare sunk a shot past Hockenberger into the bottom corner of the cage. The visitors were relentless in the second-half, shooting 18 of their 28 shots in the second stanza. Geneseo added one more goal in the 65 minute, after the game had been put away.

Turning Point
The Soaring Eagles seemed to lose some of their defensive intensity when they allowed the first two second-half goals in quick succession. The Purple and Gold could not stand up to the Knights' relentless aggression, after being outshot in the contest by 19. After the third goal for the visitors the game seemed to be well into their hands.
