ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Elmira College field hockey team lost a tough road matchup against 13th ranked University of Rochester, 4-0, on Saturday night at the Edwin Fauver Stadium in Rochester, New York.
The Yellowjackets got off to a blistering start, getting three shots in the first six minutes of the match, the last of which resulted in the first goal of the contest. Claire Dickerson gained a rebound off a
Julie Hockenberger '18 save and poked the ball past the goalkeeper from four yards out. The Yellowjackets extended the lead when Jennifer Lee tipped a pass past Hokenberger in the 14th minute.
The Purple and Gold were close to pulling the game to a one-goal deficit. It all started with a
Sarah McCaffrey's '18 penalty corner in the 26th minute. From that corner, EC would string together four straight shots, three of which were blocked and one was saved.
Atu Machika '18 had two shots in that stretch, but could not bury one past the Rochester goaltender.
The Soaring Eagles had a few chances in the second half. In the 53rd minute,
Julia Derco '17 and
Alison Mariano '18 both got chances to put the Purple and Gold on the board, but both opportunities were saved by the Yellowjackets' keeper.
Hokenberger was bombarded in the first-half facing 24 shots and making 12 saves. The Manlius, New York, native finished the match with 17 saves to tie her season-high, the third-year Soaring Eagle made 17 saves in the September 4th matchup against SUNY Cortland. Rochester finished the match with 38 shots, tied for the most that the Purple and Gold have faced this season.
The Yellowjackets would add two more second-half goals to ice the game away.
Turning Point
The Purple and Gold were unable to gain any traction in this contest. From the opening whistle, the Yellowjackets came out on a tear. Rochester controlled the ball for most of the match. The Yellow Jackets finished the game with a commanding lead in shots, 38-to-7. EC had a few chances to pull the game closer, but unable to capitalize.
