ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College men's soccer team battled King's College (Pa.) to a 1-1 double-overtime draw on Class of 2017 Recognition Day at Campus Field on Wednesday afternoon.
In a special pre-match ceremony, the members of the men's soccer team recognized the seven graduating seniors -
Sam Brosman '17,
Zach Koller '17,
Kevin Kanakan '17,
Jordan Hodlofski '17,
Haruka Okamoto '18,
Nick Machuga '18 &
Michael Girard '17, for their hard work and dedication over their times at Elmira. Â
The Monarchs started the game off quickly, firing four shots in the first 11 minutes of action, the last of which resulted in the first goal of the contest. Chris Galeano received a pass from downfield and was able to beat EC goalie Hodlofski for the first goal. The tally was controversial to say the least, as the entire Elmira bench thought the play was, or should have been halted due to an offside infraction.
The Purple and Gold did a good job of containing King's while they had the momentum after the first goal. The Monarch blasted four more shots giving them seven before the Soaring Eagles recorded their first attempt.
Michael Bryant '18 knotted the game at 1-all  with a penalty kick following a handball penalty in the King's box. Bryant addressed the ball with poise and rocketed the ball into the right side of the net past the diving goalkeeper.
The score remained tied after the first half of play. The Purple and Gold entered the second stanza with an increased offensive intensity, finishing the half with 11 shot attempts, compared to the three in the first.
The Soaring Eagles had a few chances to take the lead, the best of which was off of the foot of
Tony Barraco '18 in the 66th minute. The Liverpool, New York, native received a pass right on the top of the box and turned to shoot, King's goalie Owen Geedey was able to get a mit on the ball and push it just wide.
Defender-turned-goalie Hodlofski was instrumental in keeping the match tied. The senior tied a career-high mark with eight saves, most of which were crucial down the stretch.
With the score still tied 1-1, the Purple and Gold were headed to overtime for the second straight match. The Soaring Eagle's best opportunity in the extra session came off of the head of
Jameson Asmus '20, when he flicked the ball towards the Monarch's net, but Geedy was ready for it and punched it out of the air.
Turning Point
The Purple and Gold had some great chances that just couldn't find the back of the net. The Soaring Eagles didn't stop fighting after missing an opportunity, but they also were unable to capitalize on any of them either. Elmira was just inches away from sending its seven seniors out as winners in their last appearances on Campus Field.
