BRYN MARW, P.A. -- The Elmira College field hockey team dropped an overtime heartbreaker to non-conference opponent Bryn Mawr College, 3-2, to conclude its 2015 season on Sunday afternoon.
The Owls scored the decisive goal with no time left on the clock in overtime. With one minute left in the first overtime, the Owls were awarded a penalty corner. Samantha Heyrich fired a shot from the top of the arc that was deflected past EC keeper
Julie Hockenberger '18 to give Bryn Mawr the match.
For the first time in over two weeks, the Soaring Eagles scored the first goal of the contest. In the 10th minute,
Katie Carroll '18 and
Alison Mariano '18 attacked the Owls defense with a two-on-one rush and when the defense swayed towards Carroll she crossed a pass to a waiting Mariano and she buried a one-timer past the Bryn Mawr goalie.
The Purple and Gold continued their offensive attack, scoring another goal eight minutes later.
Atu Machika '18 scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 18th minute when she planted a Carroll centering pass into the back of the Owls' cage.
The Soaring Eagles dominated in the shots department in the first half, outshooting the Owls 9-to-0. However this trend would not continue in the second period, as the Owls outshot the Soaring Eagles, 9-to-6, in the second half and overtime.
Bryn Mawr started the second half on a tear, firing two shots in the first three minutes of the period, the second one resulting in the Owls first goal. Lydia Fisher scored off of a rebound from a Hockenberger save in the 48th minute.
The Owls tied the game at 2-2, on a Mary Cugini goal in the 67th minute. The freshman midfielder carried the ball down the field after an Elmira turnover and beat Hockenberger to the right side, to force overtime.
Unlike like first half of play, the Purple and Gold were unable to capitalize on any of their offensive chances.
Megan Brain '18 had the best chance to win the game for the Purple and Gold in overtime, but her shots in the 82nd and 84th minutes were blocked and saved, respectively.
Turning Point
The Soaring Eagles fought their hearts out for 84 minutes of action to keep the match tied. Unfortunately for the Purple and Gold, Bryn Mawr was able to capitalize on a penalty corner in the last minute of overtime. Sunday's match could have gone either way in the end, but the home team did a better job of taking advantage of its chances in the second half and overtime.
