PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's soccer team fell to Empire 8 Conference rival St. John Fisher College, 2-0, in a Sunday road matinee at Fisher's Growney Stadium.
After going on a six-game streak with at least one goal from September 10th to October 4th, the EC offense was held scoreless for the second consecutive game. The Soaring Eagles were limited to a mere three shots, the fewest since finishing the season-opener on September 1st against nationally-ranked William Smith College with two.
While the offensive output was at a minimal, all three shots recorded were on target, forcing Cardinals goalkeeper Gabriella Cotugno to make a trio of saves in the first half. In the 24th minute,
Kate DeLellis '18 ripped a shot, but Cotugno was there for the stop and SJFC went the length of the field to take a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute.
A minute following Fisher's opening tally, Elmira was awarded a corner kick, which produced a shot from
Maddie Miller '17.
Sara Kazerouni '18 also fired an attempt at Cotugno, this time in the 42nd minute, but the senior keeper gathered the ball and maintained her shutout through the intermission.
The second half was all St. John Fisher, which controlled possession for nearly the entire period and registered seven shots before senior Taryn Guinta doubled the advantage with her second tally of the afternoon in the 72nd minute.
Turning Point
The lack of scoring opportunities in the second half was detrimental for the EC women against St. John Fisher. All of Elmira's chances came in the first half, where the Soaring Eagles recorded a trio of shots and one corner kick. While SJFC's Cotugno was challenged by those three shots in the opening period, the Fisher defense didn't surrender a single shot in the final 48 minutes while clinging to a slim lead.
