WINCHESTER, Va. -- The Elmira College women's basketball team led by as many as nine points in the second half of today's non-league road bout against Shenandoah University. However, the Soaring Eagles were unable to hold on down the stretch, despite a pair of double-double efforts from
Danielle Cleary '18 and
Rachel Vespucci '19, as the Hornets marched away with a 64-57 victory.
Elmira trailed out of the halftime break by just two points, 28-26, but a strong third-quarter performance would give the Purple and Gold a seven-point lead heading into the final 10 minutes of regulation, 46-39. The Soaring Eagles outscored the Hornets 20-to-11 in the third quarter thanks to a balanced scoring attack that featured six different scorers, led by Cleary and her seven third-quarter points.
The Elmira lead did not last long though, as Shenandoah pieced together a 12-2 run in the opening three minutes to reclaim a 51-48 advantage. Shenandoah's run was fueled by its concentrated effort on the defensive side of the floor, as the Hornets forced a pair of Soaring Eagle turnovers and held Elmira without a field goal attempt for the first 2:04 of the quarter.
From there, the two squads traded a trio of baskets, with the Hornets getting a layup from Kirstyn Arcata, while Elmira saw Cleary drain two of her three 3-pointers of the contest to pull the Purple and Gold ahead, 54-53, with 5:04 to play. Unfortunately, Elmira's offense struggled in the final half of the quarter, going 1-for-6 from the field and 1-for-3 from the charity stripe, all while committing four turnovers.
Despite EC's shooting woes, the Soaring Eagles still managed to keep it a one-point game, as Vespucci connected on an and-one opportunity at the 1:35 mark of the period. The old fashioned 3-point play by Vespucci brought the Purple and Gold to within one, 58-57, but the Hornets closed out the contest with a 6-0 run, fueled by a 4-for-4 shooting from the free-throw line, to secure a seven-point win.
Turing Point
After going up by nine points on two occasions in the third quarter, Elmira's offense struggled in the fourth quarter, especially in the opening three minutes. Elmira attempted just one shot from the field, but a pair of missed free-throws and turnovers sparked a 12-2 Shenandoah run, which swung momentum back into the hands of the home team. The 0-for-2 shooting from the charity stripe was part of a mediocre performance that saw the Soaring Eagles connect on less than half of their foul shot attempts in today's contest (7-of-15).
