Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College baseball team resumed its three-game series with St. John Fisher College on Saturday afternoon at Dunn Field. The Soaring Eagles set out looking to get the bats going after falling in a tight contest in the first game of the series on Friday; however, it was the Cardinal arms that dominated the day. Fisher swept both ends of Saturday's doubleheader, winning the opener 4-1, before Marc Iseneker tossed a no-hitter in a 9-0 final in game two. With the sweep, Elmira falls to 0-3 to begin Empire 8 Conference play.
For the second straight day, Elmira got on the board early, scratching across a run in the first inning of today's opening contest.
Bryce Plante '18 reached base on an error by Fisher shortstop Mike Roman, advancing to second on the errant throw.
Dylan Bellinger '17 followed with a walk, while both runners advanced 90-feet on a wild pitch from Cardinals' starter Terry Engels.
Conor Bawiec '18 pushed Plante across with an infield single; however, the inning stalled from there. Engels retired the next two batters to help Fisher escape the inning down just 1-0.
Bawiec breezed through the Cardinals order until hitting a bit of a speed bump in the third. Joe Simmons led off the inning with a double to center. The sophomore righty looked as though he was going to escape the jam, as he induced a ground out to Plante at short, before striking out Fisher's table-setter Cody Wiktorski on a wicked curve ball. Unfortunately, a defensive lapse bit the Soaring Eagles, as Simmons came in to score on an error by Plante to tie the game.
Fisher pulled ahead for good the following inning, plating three runs to take a 4-1 lead. Shaky defense again contributed to the Cardinal rally, as Elmira committed two errors in the frame. Evan Ryan delivered the big blow in the inning, slashing a double down the right-field line to collect two RBIs.
EC threatened twice more in the contest. A
Hayden Rothenberg '17 double in the fifth inning put runners on second and third with two outs, but Fisher starter Terry Engels escaped the jam with a swinging strikeout of Plante. The Soaring Eagles also put a runner into scoring position in the seventh, as
Rey Colon '18 drove a double into the gap in right center; however, St. John Fisher turned to Loukas Brigham in the pen to lock down the save for the second time in as many days.
Game two had a bad feel from the start, as St. John Fisher capitalized on a pair of Elmira defensive miscues to score three runs off starter
Andy Reed '19. Frank Carnevale laced an RBI-double down the left field line, while Malcolm Kelsey delivered a sacrifice fly to right to push the Cardinals ahead 3-0.
Fisher's second game starter Marc Iseneker was locked in from the opening pitch. He was nearly perfect, relinquishing only a second inning walk to Elmira's
Conor Bawiec '18. He quickly erased the lone Soaring Eagle runner with a double play. The Cardinals' junior ace retired the final 23 batters he faced, racking up 11 strikeouts to notch his first career no-hitter.
Fisher tacked on insurance runs in both the second and third innings off of Reed. EC's rooking southpaw went four innings in total, allowing seven runs, four of them earned, while also striking out one. The EC bullpen limited the Cardinals to two runs over the final five innings with scoreless appearances from
Davis Salzman '18,
Mike Ladka '16,
Blake Phelps '19, and
Dennis Rudolph '18.
Elmira's best chance for hits came in the seventh inning. Both Rothenberg and Rudolph squared up the baseball in the frame, but it was the stellar defense of the St. John Fisher hurler that kept Elmira hitless. Rothenberg led off the frame with a ripped liner that was snared on the backhand by Iseneker. Rudolph followed with a hard comebacker that Iseneker knocked down, before calmly tossing to first to complete the putout.
