Â
New Paltz, NY -- The Elmira College baseball team continued its non-conference road swing on Saturday afternoon when it took on SUNY New Paltz in a doubleheader at Loren Campbell Memorial Field. After the home Hawks sprinted out to a lopsided victory in the day's opener, both teams locked in a pitcher's duel in game two. SUNY New Paltz was able to outlast the Soaring Eagles to take a 2-1 win in 10 innings.
Â
Andy Reed '19 got the start for Elmira in the second game of the afternoon. The rookie southpaw dazzled in the finest outing of his young career, firing 8.0 innings of one-run ball in a game that went to extra innings.
Â
The Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth, as Anthony Patano led off the inning with a double, while he advanced to third on a defensive miscue. Chris Moran followed with an RBI-single to right-center.
Â
Elmira gained little traction offensively throughout the contest, as the New Paltz arms kept EC off-balance throughout the day. Reed matched the effort down the stretch, retiring nine straight batters heading into the Soaring Eagle's last at-bat in the top of the seventh. The Purple and Gold finally got on the board to extend the contest in their final at-bat.
Â
Dylan Bellinger '17 led-off the frame with a ground-rule double.
Dennis Rudolph '18 advanced him to third with a sacrifice bunt, but the game would come down to the final out, as
Harrison Zambarano '19 grounded out to the shortstop with the infield drawn in.
Will Jenkins '18 delivered the big hit for Elmira, lacing a two-out RBI-double to center to tie the game.
Â
Reed made it stand up over the next two innings with more quality work on the mound. The New Paltz pen also held firm once the game went to extra-innings.
Â
The Soaring Eagles turned the ball over to another rookie arm to begin the ninth, sending
Nick Cottone '19 to the hill. Although he relinquished a pair of single, allowing runners to reach second and third with two-outs, he was able to induce a fly out to escape the jam in the ninth. Unfortunately, the Hawks were able to get the winning run the following inning, when Nick DePietro sent a 1-1 offering by Cottone over the fence in left for a walk-off solo homer.
Â
The opening contest of the day got off to positive start for the Soaring Eagles. Bellinger continued to showcase his power surge of recent weeks, driving an offering by New Paltz starter Conor Donachie over the fence in left-center to stake Elmira to a 1-0 lead three batters into the game.
Â
The lead did not last for long, as the Hawks were able to get to EC's game-one starter,
Dennis Rudolph '18, early and often. New Paltz tied the game in the bottom of the first, going on to collect 11 hits and six runs during Rudolph's 3.0 innings of work.
Â
Blake Phelps '19 was brought on to settle things down to begin the fourth inning, but was tagged for six runs in just 1.2 innings of work.
Davis Salzman '18 stymied the New Paltz offense in a strong bounce-back performance by the second-year righty. He allowed only two hits and one walk over 3.1 solid relief innings, but the damage was already done with the Hawks leading 12-1.
