Â
CORTLAND, N.Y. -- A hefty 40-to-17 advantage in shots on goal helped the fifth-ranked Elmira College women's ice hockey team get back to its winning ways, as the Soaring Eagles scored a 5-1 road win against SUNY Cortland in ECAC West Conference action. With the win, Elmira remains atop the ECAC West standings with a perfect 7-0-0 league record. Second-year skater
Maddie Evangelous '19 led the charge with three points on two assists and one goal, which would go down as tonight's game winner.
Â
Elmira more than doubled Cortland's shot total in the first period, 10-4, which helped EC skate into the first intermission with a one-goal lead.
Maddy Jerolman '19 scored the lone goal of the first period for the Soaring Eagles with just 56 seconds remaining on the clock. Jerolman's classmate, Evangelous, was credited with an assist on the game-opening score.
Â
It took 6:11 of the second stanza for Elmira to double its lead, as Evangelous found the back of the cage for her fifth goal of the season. Evangelous' goal, which held up as the game-winning tally, was assisted by blueliners
Meg Lahey '19 and
Kiana Melvin '20.
Â
Melvin was dinged for a checking penalty just about two minutes later, putting Cortland's power-play unit on the ice for a second time on the night. However, the extra skater did not benefit the Red Dragons as they had hoped, as second-year forward
Katie Granato '19 struck for a shorthanded goal just 21 seconds into the Cortland power play at the 8:27 mark. Assisting on the Granato score was
Kristin Chivers '19 and Evangelous.
Â
The Red Dragons answered with their first and only goal of the evening exactly eight minutes later, when Carly Weigold scored her third of the year. Samantha Pippin and Ally Edwards picked up assists on the Weigold tally, which held up through the end of the second period.
Â
Elmira tacked on two additional goals in the third period to seal its eighth victory of the season by a 5-1 final score. Opening the third-period scoring was senior
Jessica Prance '17, who notched her third tally of the season on an assist from Chivers, her second of the night.
Â
Jerolman concluded the game's scoring with her sixth goal of the season with 2:58 left in regulation. The Jerolman tally came on EC's fifth and final power-play opportunity of the night, which snapped a 0-for-25 power-play drought. Third-year forward
Sarah Hughson '18 was credited with an assist on the score.
Â
Turning Point
A 2:16 span in the early stages of the second period saw the Soaring Eagles strike for back-to-back goals, which helped EC cushion its lead at 3-0. The three goals proved to be more than enough for the Purple and Gold, which went on to win by four goals. Fueling Elmira's offense was
Maddie Evangelous, who had hand in each of Elmira's first three goals of the night, including the eventual game-winning goal at the 6:11 mark of the second stanza.
