UTICA, N.Y. -- The No. 4/5 ranked Elmira College women's ice hockey team jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first period, but the host Pioneers of Utica College were able to rally down the stretch and skate away with a 2-2 overtime tie. With today's tie, Elmira remains unbeaten in ECAC West Conference play at 10-0-1 and stayed atop the league standings.
Maddy Jerolman '19 wasted little time putting the Soaring Eagles out in front, as the sophomore winger tallied a power-play goal just 37 seconds into regulation. Jerolman's goal, which was her eighth of the season, was assisted by
Meg Lahey '19 and
Louisa Lippiatt Durnell '18.
Exactly 8:30 passed before the Purple and Gold cushioned their lead with a tally from third-year blueliner
Rachel Grampp '18 at the 9:07 mark of the first period. The goal from Grampp was scored at even strength and was assisted by Swedish nationals
Anna Tude '17 and
Johanna Eidensten '17.
The Soaring Eagle lead nearly stayed intact through the end of the period, but Utica's Elizabeth Dohner found the back of the cage with 1:07 left in the opening frame to bring the Pioneers to within one of Elmira. Gabrielle Schnepp and Taylor Osowski picked up assists on the goal, as Elmira went into the first intermission with a 2-1 lead.
Neither team was able to break through for a score in the second stanza, despite 11 shots for Elmira and 10 from Utica. EC also had a 5-on-4 power play late in period, but was unable to cash in on the opportunity.
Elmira clung to its one-goal lead, but a pesky Pioneer squad rallied with a power-play score midway through the third period to even the game at 2-2. Elizabeth Dohner scored the eventual game-tying goal for Utica with just 16 seconds left on the power play, while Schnepp and Jane Pagano picked up assists on the extra-skater goal.
Dohner's tally forced a five-minute overtime session, one that would see the Soaring Eagles outshoot the Pioneers, 5-2. Despite a few quality scoring chances, Elmira was unable to find the game-winner, as today's game ended in a 2-2 overtime draw.
Turning Point
After jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, it looked as though the Soaring Eagles would be in the driver's seat for the rest of the way out. However, after conceding a goal late in the first period, the Pioneers would capitalize on their lone power-play chance of the evening midway through the third frame. The power-play score was the third given up by Elmira in its last three games.
