ELMIRA, N.Y. -- A game-high 17 points from Elmira College women's basketball's
Emily Green '18 proved to not be enough as SUNY Geneseo defeated the Soaring Eagles 71-41 on Thursday evening.
The Soaring Eagles kept the contest close in the opening quarter thanks in large part to the hot shooting of Green. Green went 3-for-4 from distance in the first, on her way to nine opening-quarter points. The most impressive of Green's three opening quarter treys was her shot at the buzzer that pulled the deficit to 19-13.
The Knights started to use their effective shooting to pull away in the second quarter. Geneseo went 16-for-30 from the field in the half on their way to a 39-23 halftime lead.
Elmira was unable to keep up with the Knights lights-out shooting, as the Soaring Eagles shot 16-for-55 in the game for a 29.1 field-goal percentage. On the other side of the court, the Knights maintained their scoring efficiency and finished the contest with a 49.2 field-goal percentage. This disparity in shooting ensured the 71-41 victory for Geneseo. Â
Green continued her hot shooting, as she hit two more 3-pointers in the game on her way to her 17 points. Her five treys are a new career high. Another bright spot for the Soaring Eagles was the play of
Lindsey Heaton '19. The sophomore guard posted 11 points and dished out five dimes.
Â
Turning Point
After Green made her buzzer-beating trey, the Purple and Gold faced a manageable 19-13 deficit after one. In the second quarter, the Knights started to pull away, as EC was unable to keep up with Geneseo's hot shooting. Another factor that helped Geneseo increase its lead was the difference in bench scoring. The Knights' bench scored 34 points in the contest, while the EC bench scored two, a
Marissa Silverman '17 bucket in the first quarter. Â Geneseo used the differences in shooting and bench scoring to cruise to the 71-41 triumph. Â Â
