ELMIRA, N.Y. --
Despite a handful of quality scoring chances, including a pair that rattled off the goal post, the Elmira College women's soccer team fell short in Empire 8 Conference action to visiting Utica College by a 3-0 final score. Elmira donned special pink uniforms in today's contest to raise breast cancer awareness, as part of EC's Paint the Field Pink Game.

The Pioneers of Utica held a 22-to-7 lead in shots, as well as a 10-to-4 edge in shots on goal. The bulk of Utica's attempts came in the opening 45 minutes of regulation, as the Pioneers launched 13 of their 22 shots. Corner kick chances were also in favor of Utica, 6-1. Additionally, Elmira was whistled for offsides 11 times, while Utica was called for the infraction just twice.

Elmira's defense stood its ground for much of the opening half, but Utica was able to breakthrough for the game-opening goal in the 40th minute on a tally by Gabrielle Esposito. Esposito, who scored her second of the season, was assisted by AnnaLisa MacPhee and sent the Pioneers into the halftime break with a 1-0 lead.

EC looked to slow down the Utica offense in the second stanza, but the final 45 minutes proved to be much of the same for both sides, as the Pioneers struck for a pair of second-half goals to go up by a 3-0 score. Jenna Mazza scored her third of the season in the 59th minute, as a long through ball by Kerri Berkowitz set up a one-on-one with EC's starting goalie, Rachel Grampp '18, which Mazza finished with a nice move inside the six-yard mark. Kierra Caissey scored Utica's third goal of the game from six yards out, after collecting a rebound by Berkowitz and burying the shot into the open net.

Elmira's best scoring chances came in the final 10 minutes of the second half. On a free kick from 22 yards out in the 81st minute, Amy Sullivan '18 bent a shot around the Utica wall and towards the upper right corner. However, her attempt rattled off the post and back into the field of play. Then in the 87th minute, Jordyn Rousselle '18 volleyed a shot from eight yards out, but her attempt caromed off the crossbar.

In goal, Grampp finished with seven saves for EC, while Ali DeSalvatore '20 came in for a relief appearance. DeSalvatore did not face a single shot on goal during the 9:27 of playing time she logged this afternoon. Utica's goalkeeper, Allison Wagner, registered four saves in a winning effort.
