Men’s Soccer Drops Tight 1-0 Decision to Scranton in Tuesday Afternoon Match

ELMIRA, N.Y. --
The Elmira College men's soccer team fell in non-conference action this afternoon at Campus Field to the University of Scranton by a 1-0 final score. Freshman goalie Jacob Mattice '21 made his third start of the year and registered five saves.

Scranton held a decisive 11-to-1 advantage in shots, including a 6-0 edge in shots on goal. With most of today's action taking place in the middle third of the field, neither team was able to generate many corner kick chances, as the Royals were awarded the lone corner kick of the game in the first half.

After spending much of the previous game in their defensive third, the Soaring Eagles enjoyed a good amount of possession and dictated the pace of play in the first half of today's contest. However, the Royals' defense proved to be a tough shell to crack, as Elmira was held to just one shot in the opening half that was blocked by a Scranton defender. Scranton, on the other hand, was able to generate five first-half shots, the final of which decided the outcome of today's contest.

With the first half coming to a close, a failed clear by the Soaring Eagles set up a long feed into the box by Patrick Prinner from 40 yards out. Prinner's service weaved its way through several purple and gold jerseys to Nick Kapelewski, who was just inside the 18-yard box. From there, Kapelewski muscled off an EC defender and volleyed the ball past an outstretched Mattice for the eventual game-winning goal with just 52 seconds remaining in the first half.

The second half was controlled by the Royals, who utilized ball possession and a stingy defense to keep the EC attack at bay. Those efforts helped Scranton secure a one-goal road victory and earn its ninth win of the year.

In His Own Words…
Head Coach Kevin Brenner shares his thoughts on today's match…
"I thought the team played exceptionally well today against a 2016 NCAA Tournament team in Scranton. I thought we completely dominated the first half and were unfortunate to give a goal up with 52 seconds remaining, which proved to be the difference. Our possession rate, player movements and creativity was spot-on today. We will take this positivity into a vital Empire 8 matchup on Saturday afternoon at home."
