SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- A pair of goals in the opening 22 minutes of regulation by Skidmore College proved to be the difference this evening, as the Elmira College men's soccer team fell on the road to the Thoroughbreds in non-league action by a 3-0 final score. Rookies
Cameron Lambert '21 and
Jacob Mattice '21 made their first collegiate appearances tonight for the Purple and Gold.
Skidmore held a 16-5 lead in shots in tonight's contest, including an 8-1 edge in shots on goal. The Thoroughbreds also led in corner kick opportunities, 7-1, with Elmira's lone corner coming in the first 19 minutes of the contest. Elmira's
Jacob Liese '20 and
Anthony Lipp '21 combined to make five saves in the match, as Liese made three stops in the first half and Lipp turned away two shots in the second half.
Will Greening put the Thoroughbreds on the scoreboard in the 15th minute off of Skidmore's second corner kick of the game. Brennan Mitrolka sent the cross into the box, where Greening was there to head the ball into the back of the net for his first goal of the season.
Exactly seven minutes later, Jeremy Tenenbaum doubled the Skidmore lead to 2-0 with his first goal of the 2017 campaign. Tenenbaum dribbled his way into the 18-yard box, before burying the shot into the goal from six yards out. The strike held up through the end of the first half, as Skidmore marched into the halftime break with a 2-0 lead.
In the second half, Elmira upped its pressure in the opening minutes, which helped the Soaring Eagles generate a pair of quality scoring chances. The first came in the 54th minute, when
Cameron Sanderson '20 laced a shot on target, EC's lone shot on goal, but Skidmore's Pearse Martin was there to make the stop.
Then in the 55th minute, it looked as though the Soaring Eagles cut the Skidmore lead in half, but their goal was called back for offsides, as the Thoroughbreds maintained their two-goal advantage.
Elmira's inability to capitalize on those scoring chances proved to be costly, as Skidmore's leading goal scorer, Augustine Okoye, scored his sixth of the season in the 60th minute. Okoye's insurance goal was assisted by Dario Flores, who sent a long pass into the box to set up the scoring play.
Elmira was limited to just one shot from that point on, which sailed high in the 88th minute, as the Thoroughbreds avenged last year's one-goal defeat to the Purple and Gold with a 3-0 win.
In His Own Words…
Head Coach
Kevin Brenner shares his thoughts on EC's performance this evening…
"I thought tonight had a very positive start to the second half for about a 15-minutes spell, but outside of that credit a very strong Skidmore team. We played tonight having one eye on Saturday giving players plenty of rest in preparation for a huge Empire 8 matchup on Saturday afternoon."
