ASTON, Pa. -- The Elmira College men's ice hockey team skated to a 5-2 setback to Neumann University in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) action on Saturday afternoon in Aston, Pennsylvania.
The Soaring Eagles came out of the gates quickly, getting 13 shots in the first 11:48 of the contest. Despite the early pressure, EC was held scoreless. The Knights' keeper Sammy Bernard made 11 saves in the period.
Neumann answered Elmira's pressure with a goal of its own at the 8:12 mark. The Knights scored again just 2:47 later to expand the lead to 2-0.
The score stayed at 2-0 for the next 8:38 until
Blake O'Neill '19 was able to score a power-play strike that cut EC's margin to just one goal, 2-1. With the tally, O'Neill has scored in back-to-back games for the second time in his collegiate career.
Patrick Schmelzinger '20 and
Ryan Blais '21 were credited with assists on the goal.
Elmira's new momentum was short lived, however, as Neumann's Jake Davidson scored his second goal of the day, just 1:13 into the second period, giving the Knights a 3-1 advantage. After the second goal, the Soaring Eagles made a goalie change and brought in
Jake Sabourin '21 for starter
Gennaro Anzevino '21, who made six saves in 21:13 of action. In relief, Sabourin posted 20 saves.
Despite falling behind by two goals, EC again answered to make it a one-goal game, 3-2.
Spencer MacLean '20 was credited with the score at the 4:06 mark.
Jamie Dorsey '21 and
Mitch Atkins '19 were given assists on the play, their first of the season.
Unfortunately for the Soaring Eagles, this momentum was again quickly halted, as a Davidson goal at the 5:41 mark, his third of the game, would seal the victory for Neumann. The Knights added one more in the second to take the 5-2 UCHC win.
Although the final score sat in Neumann's favor, the contest was evenly played throughout. The two teams finished the game with an identical shot total of 31 and both teams were called for six penalties. On the power play, Elmira finished 1-for-5, while the Knights were 1-for-4.
