ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Senior
Lindsay Wargo '17 equaled her previous career high with 17 saves for the Elmira College women's lacrosse team, but it wasn't enough for the Soaring Eagles, who were defeated by a score of 18-7 by Nazareth College in an Empire 8 Conference contest on Saturday.
The host Golden Flyers recorded 12 of the game's first 14 goals, racing out to a lopsided 12-2 lead before halftime. Aiding Naz's effort was a perfect 14-for-14 effort on draw controls in the first half. Although it took 5:25 seconds for the Golden Flyers to net their first goal, they were able to quickly add two more in a span of 1:35 by winning each of the following draws.
Kelcey Crawford '18 halted EC's scoreless drought at the 20:52 mark of the opening half, which reduced the deficit to 4-1. However, after winning each of the following draws, the Golden Flyers extended their lead to 7-1 with three scores in a span of just 1:24.
Kelsey Quail '17 and
Hayley Baker '19 began the scoring in the second half with back-to-back goals, with the latter off the stick of Baker making it a 12-4 game in favor of the Golden Flyers. Crawford and Quail each scored once more in the second half, while Baker completed her hat trick with Elmira's sixth goal at the 6:12 mark of the half.
Although the Golden Flyers found the back of the net early and often, Wargo turned in a strong performance between the pipes for the Soaring Eagles. The Madison, Connecticut, native was able to tie her career high with 17 saves, equaling her previous single-game best, which she recorded in last season's tilt against Nazareth. The reigning Empire 8 Conference Goalie of the Week has now surpassed the 100-save plateau for the second time, and her 109 stops on the season are the eighth-most in team history.
Turning Point
The inability to win draw controls proved to be fatal for the Soaring Eagles during Saturday's road contest with the Golden Flyers. EC had posted double-digit draw controls in six consecutive games, including a season-high 17 in the victory over Wells College on April 5. However, Naz limited the Purple and Gold to a mere three draw controls – all in the second half – only one more than EC's single-game season low. Without winning draws, Elmira's offensive possessions were limited and Naz was able to keep the ball in their end for much of the game.
