BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- For the second consecutive contest, the Elmira College men's lacrosse team stumbled in a non-conference bout against a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) program, when the Soaring Eagles fell to The College at Brockport by a 19-5 final score on Wednesday afternoon.
EC got off to a good start in the game, as
Nevin Olney '18 put the Purple and Gold up 1-0 in the first 1:49 of the tilt with an unassisted man-up goal.
Following a Golden Eagles' tally that knotted up the score at 1-all, Elmira retook the lead with a goal of its own.
Anthony LaRusso '17 buried the ball past Brockport's goalkeeper Dallas Meyers at the 9:05 mark of the first quarter to give the Soaring Eagles their second one-goal advantage of the contest.
From that point, however, the game started to get away from EC. In a stretch spanning part of the first, second and third quarters, the Golden Eagles scored 13-straight goals to take a commanding 14-2 lead.
The Soaring Eagles did not score again until the 8:44 mark of the third quarter when
Wyatt Katsos '17 buried an Olney pass past the Brockport goalie. Just over a minute later, Katsos scored his second goal of the day, which was assisted by
Joe Greene '17. With the two consecutive tallies from Katsos, the Purple and Gold cut the deficit to 10 goals, 14-4.
Olney continued Elmira's scoring run with his second goal of the game at the 5:48 mark of the third. Following three-straight EC scores, the Soaring Eagles drew the deficit under double digits, 14-5.
Unfortunately for the Purple and Gold, this scoring streak did not continue, as they were held scoreless for the remainder of the game. Brockport, on the other hand, tallied five more goals before the end of the day to take the 19-5 triumph.
Turning Point
The biggest differentiating factor in today's matchup was the Golden Eagles' advantage in the faceoff circle. On the day, Brockport lost just two of the 28 faceoffs in the contest. This allowed the home team to keep the ball, set up its offense and set its desired tempo in the game. This disparity in faceoff wins gave the Golden Eagles the opportunity to take the lead and keep it for much of the non-conference bout.
