ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College baseball team was unable to overcome the hot batting of Route 13 rival Ithaca College, as the Soaring Eagles fell in today's Empire 8 Conference contest by a 14-6 final score at historic Dunn Field.
The Bombers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after the top of the second inning. Ithaca's Trevor Thompson started off the push with a RBI double to left field off of EC's starter
Andy Reed '19 in the top of the first inning. A sac fly from Matt Carey in the bottom of the second gave the Bombers the 2-0 advantage.
The Soaring Eagles did not score until the bottom of the third when Ithaca's starting pitcher Jake Binder threw the ball over the first baseman's head on an attempted sacrifice bunt by
Conor Bawiec '18.
Bryce Plante '18 took advantage of the wild throw by scoring from second base.
Entering the top of the fifth leading 2-1, the Bombers started to pull away, as they plated five runs in the frame. The first run of the surge was scored off of a fielder's choice to short that drove home one run. Ithaca scored two more runs with back-to-back RBI doubles with one out. Ryan Henchey capped off the push with a two-run bomb over the left field wall, giving Ithaca a 7-1 lead.
Following a scoreless bottom of the fifth for EC, the Bombers continued their offensive assault by scoring six in the top of the sixth frame. Adam Gallagher's homer to lead off the inning highlighted the surge. Henchey added three more runs with a RBI double that cleared the bases. By the end of the top of the frame, Ithaca had expanded its lead to 13-1.
EC started a comeback attempt in seventh, as
Dennis Rudolph '18 drove home both
Jansen Crossley '20 and
Harrison Zambarano '19 to draw the margin back to 10 runs, 13-3. The Bombers added one more in the top of the eighth, expanding its lead back to 14-3.
In the bottom of the eighth frame, Elmira scored three runs to cut the margin to 14-6.
Justin Iannotto '20 started the surge by scoring from second base off of a throwing error by Ithaca's shortstop.
Tommy Fogarty '20 scored the next run on a wild pitch by Logan Barer.
Dylan Bellinger '17 added the last run with a sacrifice fly to center field that plated Bawiec.
Unfortunately for the Soaring Eagles, the late comeback attempt proved to not be enough, as they were unable to cut the margin any further for the remained of the game.
Turning Point
Entering the top of the fifth inning, Elmira trailed the Bombers by just one run, 2-1. In that half of the frame, Ithaca's bats started to take over the game. With five runs on six hits, the Bombers quickly took a 7-1 lead. The top of the sixth inning was much of the same, as Ithaca plated six more insurance runs to grow its lead to 13-1. This double-digit advantage proved to be too much for EC to overcome, as it was resigned to the 14-6 conference setback.
