PINE VALLEY, N.Y. -- The Elmira College field hockey team continued Empire 8 Conference play with a 5-0 defeat at the hands of reigning E8 Tournament finalist, Washington and Jefferson College, on Saturday afternoon at the Murray Athletic Center.
The visiting Presidents held a significant advantage in possession and were able to keep the ball on the offensive side of the field for most of the contest. They only needed one-and-a-half minutes to tally the game's first goal. Although EC netminder
Tina O'Donnell '20 was there to deny Washington and Jefferson's Alana Boyd on the initial shot attempt, Ashley Overton gathered the rebound and immediately fired into the back of the cage.
The Soaring Eagles looked to draw the game even, as they were awarded consecutive penalty corners less than a minute apart, beginning in the fifth minute. The Purple and Gold were unable to register a shot on target on the first corner entry, but
Atu Machika '18 bounced an attempt off the leg pad of Presidents goalie Karlie Baran on the second try.
On the other end of the field, the Presidents cashed on a penalty corner of their own at 12:33 to double the lead to 2-0, as Claire Shaak just caught a piece of a shot rocketed on from the outside of the 12-meter arc by Gabby Barr.
In the 15th minute, the Soaring Eagles earned another pair of penalty corners. This time,
Emily Selbert '20 took a hard swing at the ball, but was rejected again by Baran. That would be Elmira's second-to-last shot on goal of the entire contest; the other was taken by
Janie Kempf '21 midway through the second half with Washington and Jefferson already up 4-0. Kempf's attempt was followed by another EC penalty corner, but Machika's swing sailed wide of its target.
O'Donnell, in her fourth start of the 2017 season, turned aside a trio of shots in 35:00. Senior goalie
Julie Hockenberger '18 played the entire second half and posted a game-high five saves.
