ITHACA, N.Y. -- Former Empire 8 Conference foe and Route 13 rival, Ithaca College, topped the Elmira College field hockey team by a 5-0 final score on Wednesday evening in Ithaca, New York. Despite the loss, EC goalkeeper
Julie Hockenberger '18 used a tremendous effort to record 16 saves, becoming the fifth goalie in program history to collect 400-plus career saves.
Hockenberger, who was just one game removed from registering a career-high 19 stops against Stevens Institute of Technology, nearly matched that feat again in Ithaca with her second consecutive double-digit save outing. In 48 appearances throughout her collegiate career, the Manlius, New York, native has amassed 405 saves and is just 10 shy of tying Ann Phillips '07 for fourth-place all-time in program history.
The Bombers, in their first year as a member of the Liberty League, improved to 5-3 overall and 3-1 against their former E8 conference affiliates by scoring a season-high five goals on a single-game high 32 shots. IC held a significant advantage in possession and limited the EC offense to just five shots, one of which was on goal.
The hosts needed little time to jumpstart their offense, as Meg Dowd netted the game's first goal just 1:33 after the opening whistle. Less than a minute later, Michaela Donohue scored her first of two goals to double Ithaca's lead to 2-0. Hockenberger made five stops over the next 23-plus minutes to keep the Bombers' offense in check. However, IC would tally once more in the first half and carried a three-goal lead into the break.
Hockenberger did her best to fend off the relentless Ithaca offense again in the second half, as she made five more saves in a nine-minute span to begin the second half. Alas, the Bombers padded their lead with two more tallies, including another from Donohue, in the final 23:12 of regulation.
The Soaring Eagles generated five penalty corners, three of which came in the first half.
Janie Kempf '21 was able to release a shot on two of the first-half corner entries, but both were blocked by Ithaca defenders. The freshman forward fired one more shot off of a penalty corner in the second half, but her attempt sailed wide of the cage.
