ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Rainy and wet conditions, along with a lopsided shot count, proved to be too much for the Elmira College women's soccer team to overcome, as the Soaring Eagles dropped a 5-2 decision on Campus Field to the Eagles of Mary Washington. Elmira seniors
Jordyn Rousselle '18 (1g, 1a) and
Sara Kazerouni '18 (1g, 1a) led EC with three points apiece.
The Eagles outshot Elmira 33-to-7, and were also more efficient putting those attempts on target with 19 shots on goal compared to Elmira's five. Additionally, corner chances finished in favor of Elmira, 4-3, but the Soaring Eagles were unable to capitalize on any of those opportunities.
In net, Mary Washington's Kelcie Macomber allowed two goals and made three stops. Elmira's starter,
Rachel Grampp '18, turned away a season-high 15 shots in just her second career start for the Purple and Gold.
Mary Washington jumped all over Elmira in the opening 45 minutes and outshot the Soaring Eagles 20-to-1. However, despite the gapping shot-count difference, Elmira was able to head into the halftime break with just a one-goal deficit.
UMW's Katie Rauch began the day's scoring at the 11:17 mark, as a deflected ball inside the box made its way to her feet. Rauch took one touch and buried the shot into the corner of the goal. The Eagles quickly made it a two-goal lead just 41 seconds later, as Brooke Bauman carried the ball inside the 18-yard box and rifled a low-lining shot into the left-side netting to give Mary Washington a 2-0 lead.
The Eagles maintained the pressure throughout the first half, but a mental lapse on defense in the 35th minute allowed the Soaring Eagles to put their first goal on the scoreboard. Kazerouni set up the scoring play by beating a defender along the right sideline, before sending a throughball to a streaking Rousselle. The senior winger took on UMW's goalkeeper, Macomber, and with a quick shook of her shoulders beat the netminder, leaving the goal wide open for her to crack the ball into the net for EC's first goal of the game.
Rousselle's tally held up through the end of the first half, much of that having to do with the efforts of starting netminder Grampp. The senior goalie turned away seven shots in the opening 45 minutes, including a pair of close-range attempts inside the six-yard mark.
Elmira's defense held strong through the first 25 minutes of the second half until Brielle Mitchell connected on a free kick from 25 yards out in the 70th minute. Mitchell's shot went over to of the wall and beat Grampp, who nearly turned away the shot, but instead trickled off of her finger tips into the back of the net.
Mary Washington added to its lead just 1:41 later, as Erica Ganthner cashed in on a one-on-one opportunity to pad the Eagles' lead to 4-1. A long pass from the back line by Mackenzie Kirkham set up the scoring play.
Elmira trimmed the lead down to two goals in the 84th minute, as Kazerouni scored her first goal of the season. Rousselle set up the goal with a well-placed throughball that allowed Kazerouni to smash the ball with her instep into the side netting. The scoring play gave the seniors three points on the day, as both finished with one goal and one assist apiece.
With the game coming to a close, Jordan Rock added an insurance goal to Mary Washington's tally in the 88th minute. Rock beat a pair of EC defenders before placing the ball in the back of the net for the game's final score.
